Woman Denied CEO Role Returns to Buy Company, Fire Boss

Quick Summary

Julia Stewart, denied the CEO job at Applebee’s despite turning the company around, left to lead rival IHOP. After revitalizing IHOP, she engineered a $2.3 billion takeover of Applebee’s, fired her old boss, and went on to run the combined parent company for a decade. Today, she remains an influential leader in business and wellness.

Julia Stewart’s story reads like a Hollywood script: an executive promised the top job, betrayed at the last moment, and later returning in triumph to not only acquire her old company for billions but also fire the man who once told her she’d “never” be CEO.

Her journey from rejection to redemption offers lessons in resilience, leadership, and the art of playing the long game in business.

How Julia Stewart rose through the ranks

In the late 1990s, Julia Stewart was president of Applebee’s, then one of America’s largest casual dining chains. The board and executives told her that if she could restore profitability, she would be in line for the CEO position.

Stewart took on the challenge. She overhauled teams, brought in top talent, and reshaped the business model. Within three years, Applebee’s had become profitable again.

“I went out and pretty much started with a new team, the best that I could possibly find,” she later recalled. “What we did was pretty remarkable.”

The crushing betrayal

Confident she had earned the promised promotion, Stewart sat down with the company’s leadership. She expected at least recognition, if not an official announcement.

Instead, the then-CEO delivered a blunt rejection.

“He stops for a minute… and he says, ‘No,’” Stewart recounted. “I thought he meant, ‘No, not today.’ … But then he said, ‘No, not ever.’”

The decision blindsided her. After years of loyalty and results, she was denied the chance to lead the company she had helped save.

Turning rejection into opportunity

Stewart resigned soon after. Rather than stepping away from the restaurant business, she joined IHOP, a rival chain known for its pancakes but struggling to reinvent itself.

Over the next five years, she transformed IHOP, revitalizing its brand and driving growth. Her leadership style—rooted in team building, clarity of vision, and bold decision-making—proved exactly what the chain needed.

The $2.3 billion revenge

In 2007, Stewart made her boldest move yet: she spearheaded IHOP’s acquisition of Applebee’s for $2.3 billion. The deal created one of the largest casual dining companies in the world.

After the acquisition, Stewart made a fateful call to her former boss, then Applebee’s CEO and chair.

She reportedly told him, “The company doesn’t need the two of us. I’m going to have to let you go.”

It was a dramatic reversal—Stewart not only claimed the CEO role she had once been denied but also consolidated power over both brands.

Leading a global dining empire

Following the acquisition, Stewart became CEO and chair of Dine Brands Global, the parent company of IHOP and Applebee’s. She held the position for a decade, overseeing one of the most successful restaurant groups in the U.S.

Her tenure was marked by growth, resilience, and adaptability in a challenging dining landscape.

Life after Applebee’s and IHOP

Today, Stewart continues to shape the business world. She serves on the board of Bojangles, advises on leadership and strategy, and has founded a wellness app aimed at balancing work and life.

Her career trajectory is a case study in perseverance and strategic thinking: turning rejection into fuel for bigger victories.

Why Stewart’s story matters

Julia Stewart’s comeback resonates for several reasons:

  • Resilience in the face of rejection: Instead of letting betrayal end her career, she pivoted and thrived.
  • Strategic patience: Rather than retaliate immediately, she played the long game—building IHOP before striking the Applebee’s deal.
  • Breaking barriers: As one of the few women CEOs in the casual dining industry at the time, she set an example for female leadership in corporate America.
  • Reinvention and adaptability: She repeatedly demonstrated the ability to reinvent brands and herself.

Her story has since been used in leadership courses and business schools as an example of turning setbacks into opportunities.
