Mark Zuckerberg's Net Worth Jumps $25 Billion in One Day as Meta Shares Surge

Mark Zuckerberg’s estimated fortune jumped by about $25 billion in a single trading day as Meta Platforms shares climbed nearly 12%, according to Forbes.

The rally pushed Zuckerberg’s estimated net worth to $253.6 billion on Monday, September 21, with the sharp increase linked to growing investor interest in Meta’s artificial intelligence strategy and the company’s new AI assistant, Muse.

The surge does not mean Zuckerberg received $25 billion in cash. Much of his wealth is tied to Meta shares, so changes in the company’s stock price can cause his estimated net worth to swing by billions of dollars in a matter of hours.

Why did Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth rise by $25 billion?

Meta shares rose sharply during Monday’s session, lifting the value of Zuckerberg’s stake in the company.

Forbes reported that his estimated fortune initially increased by $12.9 billion during early trading. As Meta stock continued climbing through the day, the estimated gain reached roughly $25 billion.

By around 2 p.m. ET, Zuckerberg was ranked sixth on Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires list with an estimated fortune of $253.6 billion.

The movement illustrates the close relationship between billionaire wealth and publicly traded stocks. A large shareholding can add or erase billions of dollars in estimated wealth without the owner buying or selling a comparable amount of stock.

Meta stock jumps ahead of Meta Connect

Meta’s stock rally came just before the company’s annual Meta Connect conference, scheduled for September 23 and 24.

Investors are watching the event for more information about Meta’s artificial intelligence products, including Muse and the company’s broader plans for AI agents and wearable technology.

MarketWatch reported that Meta shares gained 11.4% on Monday, marking the stock’s strongest daily move since April 2025. The shares also reached their highest close since October 2025.

The timing was significant because Meta has been pouring enormous sums into AI infrastructure, chips, and software. Investors have increasingly focused on whether those investments can translate into products that generate meaningful revenue.

Wells Fargo raises Meta price target

Another catalyst for the stock move was a more bullish outlook from Wells Fargo.

The bank raised its price target for Meta shares to $796 from $640 while maintaining an overweight rating, according to Forbes. The bank also identified adoption of Muse as an important metric to watch ahead of Meta Connect.

A price target is an analyst’s estimate of where a stock could trade over a specified period. It is not a guarantee of future performance and can change as analysts revise their assumptions.

The upgraded target nevertheless contributed to the positive sentiment surrounding Meta shares during Monday’s trading session.

What is Meta’s Muse AI assistant?

Muse is Meta’s new personal AI agent, launched on September 8.

Unlike a conventional chatbot that primarily responds to questions, Meta says Muse is designed to take action on a user’s behalf. It can handle tasks such as sending emails, booking travel, and working across connected applications.

Meta says Muse runs through a dedicated secure virtual machine and is designed to operate across services people already use. The company has also positioned Muse as part of its effort to build AI that can move beyond conversation and actually complete tasks.

The product has become an important part of Meta’s latest AI strategy, particularly as technology companies compete to build so-called agentic AI systems capable of completing multistep tasks.

How important is Muse to Meta’s AI strategy?

Muse represents a shift in the way Meta wants consumers to interact with artificial intelligence.

Instead of requiring users to open an AI tool, type a question, and receive an answer, an AI agent can potentially perform a sequence of actions after receiving a broad instruction.

Meta’s long-term vision is even more ambitious. Zuckerberg has described the company’s goal as bringing “personal superintelligence” to users across its platforms.

That vision depends on AI systems becoming capable enough to operate reliably across apps while maintaining safeguards around personal data, payments, communications and other sensitive information.

Meta says it built Muse with security and privacy controls because the system can interact with a user’s digital environment.

Meta’s AI bet has been building for more than a decade

Meta’s current AI push did not begin with Muse.

The company established Facebook AI Research, known as FAIR, in 2013, creating a dedicated research organisation focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning.

A decade later, Meta introduced its Llama family of large language models, giving the company a major presence in the generative AI race.

AI has since been integrated into Meta’s major consumer platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.

The company has also committed substantial resources to computing infrastructure and specialised hardware as it seeks to train and operate increasingly powerful AI systems.

What happens to Zuckerberg’s wealth when Meta stock moves?

Zuckerberg is one of the clearest examples of how billionaire wealth can fluctuate with stock markets.

When Meta’s share price rises, the market value of his holdings increases, which can push his estimated net worth higher. When the stock falls, the reverse happens.

These changes are generally estimates based on publicly known holdings and market prices rather than money deposited into a bank account.

Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires methodology updates the value of public holdings as markets move, meaning rankings and fortunes can change throughout a trading session.

That is why a reported $25 billion one-day gain should be understood primarily as a change in paper wealth.

Zuckerberg’s position among the world’s richest people

The Meta chief was ranked sixth on Forbes’ real-time billionaire list during Monday’s trading session, according to the September 21 report.

At the time, he was estimated to be about $14.5 billion behind Google co-founder Sergey Brin, whose fortune was put at approximately $268.1 billion.

Billionaire rankings can change rapidly, particularly when the fortunes involved are heavily tied to public companies.

The ranking on any individual day therefore provides a snapshot rather than a permanent position in the world’s wealth hierarchy.

Why investors are watching Meta’s AI spending

Meta has spent heavily to build the computing capacity required for its AI ambitions.

That spending has also created a central question for investors: how quickly can the company turn expensive AI infrastructure into products that increase revenue, engagement or both?

The recent enthusiasm around Muse offers one possible answer. An AI agent that can carry out useful tasks could create new opportunities for subscriptions, commerce, advertising and deeper engagement across Meta’s ecosystem.

But the commercial opportunity remains tied to adoption. The more frequently consumers use an AI product, the more opportunities Meta has to build business models around it.

What comes next for Meta?

Meta Connect on September 23 and 24 is expected to provide more details about the company’s AI plans, Muse and its wearable technology strategy.

Investors will likely be watching for evidence that Meta’s enormous AI investments are translating into products people actually use.

For Zuckerberg, the immediate impact is already visible in his estimated fortune. Meta’s latest stock rally added roughly $25 billion to his wealth in a single day, illustrating just how dramatically public-market movements can alter the fortunes of the world’s richest technology entrepreneurs.

The bigger question is whether the enthusiasm surrounding Meta’s AI strategy can translate into sustained business growth beyond a single day’s stock-market rally.
