Stanley recalls 2.6 million travel mugs in US due to serious burn risk

Popular drinkware brand issues urgent safety warning

In a significant safety move, Stanley has recalled 2.6 million travel mugs after discovering a critical defect that could potentially cause serious burn injuries to consumers. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of Stanley’s Switchback and Trigger Action models on Thursday, highlighting a dangerous manufacturing issue.

Critical safety concerns emerge

The recall centers on lid threads that can shrink due to heat or prolonged usage, creating a potentially hazardous situation where the lid may detach during use. This defect poses a serious burn risk to consumers, with the company already receiving 91 complaints worldwide, including 38 confirmed burn injuries.

Extent of the recall

Affected Stanley cups, which range in price from $20 to $50, have been wildly popular in recent years, becoming a cultural phenomenon through social media platforms like TikTok and generating unprecedented customer enthusiasm. The mugs have been known to create such a buying frenzy that customers have previously formed long lines and even engaged in disputes to obtain limited-edition releases.

Company’s response

Seattle-based Stanley addressed the recall with a statement emphasizing their commitment to product quality. “We are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life,” the company said in its official communication to US media.

Notable context

The recall comes with an interesting backdrop of Stanley’s recent pop culture status. The brand has become so popular that there was even a reported incident earlier this year of a woman in California being arrested for allegedly stealing 65 Stanley cups worth nearly $2,500 from a sporting goods store.

Consumer advice

Consumers who own the affected Switchback and Trigger Action models are advised to immediately stop using the product and contact Stanley for further instructions. The full details of the recall, including specific model numbers and replacement procedures, are available through the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

This recall serves as a critical reminder of the importance of product safety and the need for manufacturers to continuously monitor and improve their production standards.
