Twitter-Musk lawsuit releases text messages
New court records reveal that before and after Tesla billionaire’s involvement with the social media platform, Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey exchanged several messages about the company. As per the text log submitted for Twitter’s lawsuit, Jack Dorsey, former CEO, and co-founder sent Musk a text on March 26. “A new platform is needed. It can’t be a company. That’s why I left,” wrote Dorsey. To this, Musk responded, “What should it look like?”
Dorsey explained what he previously expressed in public about Twitter to evolve into an “open-sourced protocol” which is similar to what Signal has done. He added that it should not have an advertising model. Currently, social media firms have advertised as their central business model. “I’d like to help if I’m able,” replied Musk. Hence, Dorsey proceeded to explain that he pushed for the same a year ago but, the Twitter board “said no”. He added that the board saw the Tesla CEO “as more risk, “Which I thought was completely stupid and backward.” “That’s about the time I decided I needed to work to leave, as hard as it was for me,” added Dorsey.

Dosey’s conversation was mentioned in an SEC filing on the potential offer to buy the platform for $44 billion. However, other messages sent at a later time were not used. A day after the news of Musk owning more than nine percent became public, Musk reached an agreement to join the Twitter board. Musk also messaged Dorsey to talk secretly. The two texted about this and Dorsey told “I couldn’t be happier you’re doing this”.
“I’ve wanted it for a long time. Got very emotional when I learned it was finally possible,” added Dorsey. Musk asked Dorsey to advise him if he was ever doing or not doing “something dumb”. On April 9, Musk pointed to the conservation with Dorsey while explaining his decision to take the company private and fix it. “This is hard to do as a public company, as purging fake users will make the numbers look terrible, so restructuring should be done as a private company. This is Jack’s opinion too,” stated Musk in his text to Bret Taylor. Taylor is the Chairman of Twitter.
