Liverpool FC

Indian-origin businessman Amit Bhatia is making headlines after leading a consortium that has expressed interest in acquiring a minority stake in Premier League champions Liverpool FC. The proposed investment, reportedly valued at around $1.8 billion for a 30% stake, would rank among the largest minority investments ever made in a football club.

Liverpool’s owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has confirmed that it has received an expression of interest from the consortium. While no deal has been finalised, the development has drawn attention to Bhatia’s long-standing involvement in sports and investment.

Is Liverpool FC being sold?

No. Liverpool is not being put up for sale in its entirety.

According to the Financial Times, Fenway Sports Group has confirmed that a consortium led by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in the club.

The proposed transaction reportedly involves:

  • A 30% minority stake in Liverpool FC.
  • A valuation of approximately $1.8 billion for that stake.
  • An overall club valuation of around $6 billion.

FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 for approximately $400 million and has overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history, both on and off the pitch.

At this stage, discussions remain exploratory, and no agreement has been announced.

Who is Amit Bhatia?

Amit Bhatia is a 46-year-old Indian-origin businessman and investor with extensive experience in sports ownership and private investments.

He graduated from Cornell University in the United States and currently leads Swordfish Investments, a multi-asset investment firm with interests across several sectors.

Bhatia is best known in football for his long association with Queens Park Rangers (QPR), where he served as co-owner and chairman for 18 seasons.

During his tenure, QPR competed in both the Premier League and the English Football League Championship.

His involvement with QPR established him as one of the few Indian-origin executives to play a significant ownership role in English professional football.

Who is backing the consortium?

The investment group is backed by billionaire industrialist Lakshmi Mittal, one of the world’s best-known steel magnates.

Mittal serves as executive chairman of ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s largest steel producers.

Amit Bhatia is married to Vanisha Mittal, Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter.

Lakshmi Mittal also has significant interests in sports and has recently been associated with investments in the Indian Premier League’s Rajasthan Royals franchise alongside other investors.

The combination of Bhatia’s football management experience and Mittal’s financial backing has made the consortium a credible potential investor.

Why is Liverpool attracting investors?

Liverpool has become one of the world’s most valuable football clubs.

Under Fenway Sports Group’s ownership, the club has experienced substantial commercial growth while winning major domestic and European trophies.

The club’s increasing revenues from broadcasting, sponsorships, merchandising, and global fan engagement have significantly boosted its valuation.

Like several elite football clubs, Liverpool has explored opportunities to attract minority investors who can provide additional capital while allowing FSG to retain operational control.

Such investments can help finance stadium improvements, infrastructure projects, commercial expansion, and future player recruitment.

How successful is Liverpool FC?

Liverpool is among the most decorated clubs in world football.

Its major achievements include:

  • 20 English league titles.
  • Six European Cups/UEFA Champions League titles.
  • Eight FA Cups.
  • Multiple League Cups and other domestic honors.
  • One FIFA Club World Cup.

The club most recently won the Premier League title during the 2024-25 season under manager Arne Slot, further strengthening its global commercial appeal.

What happens next?

Neither Liverpool nor Fenway Sports Group has announced that negotiations have concluded.

Any minority investment would likely involve:

  • Financial due diligence.
  • Regulatory approvals where required.
  • Agreement on governance rights.
  • Final valuation negotiations.

Until an agreement is officially signed, the proposed investment remains an expression of interest rather than a completed transaction.

TL;DR

  • Indian-origin businessman Amit Bhatia is leading a consortium interested in buying a minority stake in Liverpool FC.
  • The consortium is backed by steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.
  • Reports value the proposed 30% stake at approximately $1.8 billion, implying a club valuation of around $6 billion.
  • Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group has confirmed receiving the expression of interest.
  • Amit Bhatia previously served as co-owner and chairman of Queens Park Rangers for 18 seasons.
  • No deal has been finalised, and discussions remain ongoing.
