Melbourne to overtake Buenos Aires as world’s most locked-down city on October 4

Stay-at-home orders have been extended for at least another month, ensuring Melbourne, Australia, will become the most locked-down city in the world by a large margin. If so, Melbourne will overtake Buenos Aires as the world’s most locked-down city on October 4.

If lockdown lifts on October 26 as planned, Melbourne will have spent in hard lockdown for 267 days, or nearly 9 months, since March of last year.

Melbourne will overtake Buenos Aires, the world’s next most locked-down city, by 22 days. Buenos Aires had been shut down for 234 days, according to the Herald Sun.

In recent months, however, the city has been placed under lockdown for a total of 11 days, bringing the total to 245 days. On Monday, October 4, Melbourne will surpass Buenos Aires as the world’s most locked down city.

The number of days each city has been in lockdown around the world is difficult to track because each city defines stay-at-home orders differently; however, the figures are based on the best available data.

Buenos Aires had 234 days of lockdown last year. Melbourne had one of the greatest number of individual lockdowns in the world from March to November.

If it ends on time, the current lockdown will have lasted 82 days, or slightly over three months, compared to 111 days during Melbourne’s second lockdown last year.

Dublin has been in lockdown for 227 days, while London has been in lockdown for 207 days. On July 19, London celebrated “freedom day” with a near-complete reopening of businesses at full capacity.

68 percent of Britons had two vaccination doses at the time.

Melbourne’s curfew is one of the strictest in the world, joining places such as Paris in imposing one.

It led to the city’s drop from sixth to eighth position on this year’s list of the world’s most livable cities.
