Omicron BF.7: China is likely seeing 1 million Covid cases, 5,000 deaths a day

A new analysis reveals China is experiencing 1 million infections and around 5,000 deaths every day due to BF.7. Read to know more.

BF.7 fuels increasing number of cases in China

Omicron BF.7: China is likely seeing 1 million Covid cases, 5,000 deaths a day

A new analysis by London-based Airfinity Ltd., reveals that China is probably experiencing around 1 million covid infections from the BF.7 sub-variant of COVID-19. Additionally, it is experiencing about 5,000 deaths daily and grappling with what may be one of the biggest outbreaks. Moreover, the situation may worsen for the 1.4 billion strong population. The current wave may rise the daily cases to a total of 3.7 million in January 2023. The research company focuses on analyzing health and tracking the pandemic. As per their analysis, the surge will push the peak to 4.2 million by March.

However, China officially reported 2,966 new cases on Wednesday and under 10 Covid-19-related deaths since the start of December. However, it is contrasting with the increasing reports of hospitals in china being overwhelmed with sick people. The research firm uses provincial data for modeling the toll and scale of the outbreak in China. It reveals the impact of the sudden deviation from the strict zero-covid plans.

More on the health emergency

Additionally, China has changed the mode of reporting virus data. After largely shutting down the vast network of mass testing in addition to scrapping efforts to include every single case, people are relying on rapid tests. However, there is no obligation for reporting the results. The health regulator in China also adopted a highly specific definition of Covid-related death.

Hence, these changes mean “the official data is unlikely to be a true reflection of the outbreak being experienced across the country. This change could downplay the extent of deaths seen in China,” explained Louise Blair. Blair is the head of vaccines and epidemiology at Airfinity. The accurate prediction of the situation, especially the one fueled by BF.7 is very difficult as fewer nations test regularly.
