Big screen return for Johnny Depp, set to play King Louis XV in a French film

Amidst the Heard-Depp legal fiasco, Johnny Depp fans have a reason to cheer. Depp is all set to play King Louis XV in the French film ‘Jeanne Du Barry’. The film will be directed by Maiwenn (Polisse).

The historical drama will be shot at the Palace of Versailles and around Paris this summer. The film will also feature Louis Garrel, Pierre Richard, and Noemie Lvovsky.

Debut in the French cinema for Johnny Depp

The part comes at a time when Johnny Depp is battling ex-wife Amber Heard in a defamation suit. Depp has lost out on lucrative projects as a result of Heard’s allegations. After losing a libel case against a UK newspaper that dubbed him a “wife-beater,” Warner Bros. replaced Depp with Mads Mikkelsen in the sequel trilogy of the “Fantastic Beasts” series.

Depp’s latest project could also potentially be his debut in the French cinema industry. The actor has spent several years in France and speaks French with an American accent.

Depp was last seen on-screen in Andrew Levitas’ Minamata. He played an American photographer who documented the catastrophic effects of mercury poisoning on coastal communities in Japan in the 1970s.
