Hulu To Merge Into Disney+ by 2026, Marking the End of a Standalone Era

Hulu

TL;DR

Disney has announced that Hulu will be fully integrated into Disney+ by 2026, with international expansion starting October 8. The move aims to consolidate content, simplify subscriptions, and streamline Disney’s streaming strategy—while Disney+ and Hulu subscription prices rise.

What’s Happening to Hulu?

After more than 15 years as a standalone streaming service, Hulu’s independent app is set to disappear. Disney confirmed this week that Hulu will be folded entirely into Disney+ by 2026, beginning with international markets on October 8, when Hulu replaces the Star brand as Disney+’s hub for adult-oriented programming abroad.

In the U.S., Disney said subscribers will gradually see Hulu content integrated into the Disney+ app, as part of ongoing product updates aimed at creating a single app experience that combines Disney and Hulu offerings.

Hulu’s Legacy

Hulu launched in 2007 and quickly became a household name in streaming, known for current-season TV shows and acclaimed originals such as The Handmaid’s Tale. Over the years, it evolved into a key asset in the streaming wars.

This summer, Disney gained full ownership of Hulu after completing its long-anticipated acquisition of Comcast’s stake. While the standalone app will disappear, the Hulu brand will continue, marketed as “Hulu on Disney+”, leveraging international recognition as Disney phases out Star.

What Subscribers Can Expect

For now, Disney+ and Hulu remain separate services, but by 2026, all Hulu content will be accessible only via Disney+. This consolidation aims to:

  • Make it easier for subscribers to find content across platforms
  • Simplify subscription management
  • Strengthen Disney’s position in an increasingly crowded streaming market

Disney describes the transition as “ongoing and iterative,” suggesting gradual interface updates and enhanced content discovery within Disney+.

Price Changes Across Disney Streaming Services

The Hulu-Disney+ consolidation coincides with subscription price increases across Disney’s streaming portfolio, effective October 21:

ServicePrevious PriceNew PriceNotes
Disney+ (with ads)$9.99$11.99–
Disney+ Premium (ad-free)$16$19–
Hulu (with ads)$10.99$11.99–
Hulu (ad-free)$18.99$18.99No change
Hulu + Live TV (with ads)$83$90$7 increase
ESPN Select (formerly ESPN+)$11.99$12.99$1 increase

Disney explains that these adjustments reflect both the expanded catalog available in a unified Disney+/Hulu app and continued investment in original programming.

Why This Matters

Disney’s decision marks a major shift in its streaming strategy. The company is moving away from managing multiple platforms in parallel, betting that consolidation will:

  • Improve user experience by reducing app fragmentation
  • Offer streamlined access to content for international subscribers
  • Allow Disney to better compete with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other streaming rivals

Industry analysts note that the consolidation could also increase subscriber retention, as audiences prefer one hub for family and adult content rather than juggling multiple apps.

The Future of Disney Streaming

By 2026, the streaming landscape for Disney will look drastically different:

  • Disney+ will be the central platform for all Disney and Hulu content
  • Hulu as an app will no longer exist in the U.S. or abroad
  • Branding will remain visible as “Hulu on Disney+,” ensuring continuity for international audiences familiar with Hulu

This strategic move also signals Disney’s focus on simplifying offerings as streaming markets mature and competition intensifies.

Bottom Line

For long-time Hulu subscribers, the transition to Disney+ may take some adjustment—but the move reflects the evolving nature of streaming services. Disney is betting that one combined platform will enhance user experience, boost content discovery, and strengthen its position in the global streaming market.

While the standalone Hulu app may be gone, its content, brand, and influence will live on within Disney+, marking both the end of an era and the beginning of a unified streaming future.=8HI
