Iconic studio Village Roadshow, producer of Joker & Matrix, files for bankruptcy

Iconic film studio behind Joker and The Matrix faces financial turmoil

In a significant blow to the film industry, Village Roadshow, the production company behind blockbuster hits such as The Matrix trilogy and Joker, has filed for bankruptcy in the United States. The move comes amid an extended legal dispute with Warner Bros Discovery Inc.

The company, which played a key role in the rise of multiplex cinemas, sought bankruptcy protection in Delaware on March 17. According to court filings, Village Roadshow reported $223.8 million in asset-backed secured notes and $163.1 million in senior secured debt.

Financial struggles exacerbated by industry setbacks

Village Roadshow’s financial troubles began with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, which significantly impacted its revenue. The company faced further difficulties in 2023 when Hollywood’s dual strikes—by writers and a large portion of the creative workforce—halted film production and caused major financial losses.

However, the company’s liquidity crisis largely stemmed from a protracted arbitration battle with Warner Bros, its long-time business partner.

Legal dispute over The Matrix Resurrections

In 2022, Village Roadshow Entertainment initiated arbitration proceedings against Warner Bros. over the release strategy of The Matrix Resurrections. The studio alleged that Warner’s decision to premiere the film on HBO Max rather than exclusively in theaters deprived Village Roadshow of crucial box office revenue.

Furthermore, the company accused Warner Bros of shutting it out of co-ownership and co-financing rights for new installments of franchises it had originally helped develop.

According to the filing, the looming arbitration award posed a serious threat to Village Roadshow’s financial stability. Even if resolved, the lawsuit has “irreparably decimated” the company’s longstanding partnership with Warner Bros, the company stated.

A legacy spanning over two decades

Founded in 1997, Village Roadshow has produced and distributed more than 100 films, including Joker, The Great Gatsby, and The LEGO Movie.

The bankruptcy filing marks the latest chapter in the company’s struggle to navigate industry challenges and legal disputes, leaving its future uncertain.
