The launch of Netflix’s new ad-supported plan, Basic with Ads, to customers in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea, and Brazil marks a significant day for the streaming service. The launch comes two days after Netflix’s first two territories, Canada and Mexico, received the more affordable tier.
Now that it offers ad-supported options, Netflix will directly compete with other significant streaming services like Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, among others.
For those who don’t know, Basic with Ads is Netflix’s first-ever affordable ad-supported streaming package priced at $6.99 per month. It will be distinct from the current Basic plan and have no impact on the other ad-free plans that are currently in place.
What is the price of Netflix’s Basic with Ads plan?
“Basic with Ads will launch just six months after we first announced the option of a lower-priced ads plan. None of this would have been possible without our team’s hard work or Microsoft’s extraordinary partnership. The switch from linear is happening at an ever-increasing speed, with streaming now surpassing broadcast and cable in the US. We’re confident that with Netflix starting at $6.99 a month, we now have a price and plan for every fan,” the video-streaming company said while announcing the plan in its official blog post.
The Netflix ad-supported plan costs $6.99 per month for subscribers in the US. Basic with Ads costs $3 less than Basic, approximately $9 less than Standard, and $13 less than Netflix’s Premium subscription.
Ads will often run for 4 to 5 minutes per hour before and during movies and television programs. Ads will last between 15 and 30 seconds. Fortunately, new Netflix movies only receive pre-roll advertisements, so they won’t be cut off as frequently as older movies, which also receive midroll advertisements.
The Basic with Ads plan will be made available in 12 nations
To assist marketers to reach the correct audience and avoid placing adverts on unrelated content, the business said it would provide “wide targeting options by country and genre.” To confirm the viewability and traffic legitimacy of ads, Netflix has teamed with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
Basic with Ads members will have the same flexibility to switch or cancel their plans as with the other Netflix subscription tiers. Both the new plan and the current Basic plan will provide 720p/HD video with no download options. These members won’t also have access to several movies and TV shows because of licensing problems, though Netflix claims to be working on them.
