Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Faces Sentencing in Manhattan After Prostitution Conviction

Sean “Diddy” Combs, one of the most influential figures in hip-hop and business, is set to learn his fate in federal court after being convicted on two counts of prostitution-related charges earlier this summer. The sentencing could keep the 55-year-old music mogul behind bars for more than a decade.

What is Diddy being sentenced for?

In July, a Manhattan jury found Combs guilty of violating the federal Mann Act, which prohibits transporting people across state lines for prostitution. Prosecutors argued that Combs arranged for girlfriends and male sex workers to be flown around the country for sexual encounters.

He was acquitted of more severe charges, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, which could have carried a life sentence, but prosecutors maintain that the evidence of violence, coercion, and exploitation remains relevant for his punishment.

What prosecutors are asking for

Federal prosecutors are pushing for at least 11 years in prison, portraying Diddy Combs as a powerful figure who used wealth and influence to control others.

“It’s a case about a man who did horrible things to real people to satisfy his own sexual gratification,” prosecutor Christy Slavik told the court. “His currency was control.”

They also criticized Combs for allegedly planning a speaking appearance in Miami next week, calling it “the height of hubris” given his conviction.

What the defense argues

Combs’ attorneys say the recommended sentence is “wildly out of proportion” and argue that the encounters described at trial were consensual. They insist that Combs has shown remorse, found sobriety in jail, and should be released.

In his own letter to the judge, Combs wrote: “The old me died in jail and a new version of me was reborn. I will never commit another crime.”

His legal team plans to play an 11-minute video highlighting his philanthropic work, family life, and career achievements. His children and a minister are also expected to speak on his behalf.

Testimonies that shaped the trial

Combs’ nearly two-month trial featured harrowing testimony from multiple women:

  • Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, his former girlfriend and R&B singer, said Combs forced her into sex with strangers hundreds of times and described violent incidents, including being dragged and beaten in a Los Angeles hotel hallway.
  • Another witness, testifying as “Jane”, recounted being coerced into sex with male sex workers at drug-fueled “hotel nights” while Combs watched and sometimes filmed.
  • A former personal assistant, known as “Mia”, alleged that Combs raped her in 2010. She urged the judge in a written statement to impose a sentence reflecting “the ongoing danger my abuser poses to me, and to others.”

Additional testimony from friends, artists, and industry insiders painted Combs as a man capable of intimidation and violence. Rapper Kid Cudi even testified that Combs once broke into his home after learning Cudi was dating Cassie.

What’s next for Combs

U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian has already denied Combs bail twice and signaled that freedom is unlikely. While acquitted of racketeering, the judge can still consider evidence of violence and coercion when deciding the sentence.

Outside the Manhattan courthouse, crowds of photographers, supporters, and critics gathered as the music mogul, wearing a light sweater and dark trousers — entered through a side door escorted by U.S. marshals.

The judge’s final ruling could determine whether Combs spends the next decade in federal prison or secures an early release.

TL;DR

Sean “Diddy” Combs, 55, is being sentenced in Manhattan federal court after his conviction on prostitution-related charges under the Mann Act. Prosecutors are seeking more than 11 years in prison, citing years of violence and coercion. His defense team says the punishment is excessive and highlights his philanthropy and family life. Judge Arun Subramanian, who has twice denied bail, will decide Combs’ fate.
