'Squid Game' wins breakthrough series award at Gotham Awards

On November 29, 2021, the Gotham Awards were held. Hwang Dong-hyuk, Lee Jung-Jae, and JungHo-Yeon, the creators of Squid Game, were spotted at the prestigious award ceremony. Squid Game, a popular South Korean survival drama series available on Netflix, has won the Gotham Awards 2021 Breakthrough Series award. The long category was won by Hwang Dong- Hyuk’s show. Small Axe, It’s A Sin, The Good Lord Bird, The Underground Railroad, and The White Lotus are among the other series that have been nominated. It is rumored that this is certainly the first time a South Korean production has received such recognition at the Gotham Awards.

Hwang Dong-hyuk while accepting the award, said, “When I wrote this script 12 years ago in 2009 I did my best but no one liked it – they said it was too violent, absurd, weird. It took less than 12 days [after release] to become the Number One show on the planet. If there’s a miracle, this is a miracle. It happened to me. The only thing I can say is to thank you. Thank you for watching it, and thank you for loving it.”

Squid Game, which was released on Netflix, was an instant hit with viewers, and its widespread success cannot be denied. Squid Game is a dark drama that explores various themes such as capitalism and class disparities. Within a week, it had become one of Netflix’s most popular shows in several regional regions. As a result, it surprised executives by becoming the most-watched original series on the streaming service in its first month. Netflix announced on Tuesday that 142 million households had watched the dark drama about people competing in a deadly competition to erase the financial debt.

Meanwhile, Ethan Hawke for The Good Lord Bird. Thuso Mbedu for The Underground Railroad tied for Outstanding Performance in a New Series. Squid Game is also nominated for Bingeworthy Show of the Year at the People’s Choice Awards. However, it will be held on December 7th.
