Full-time remote workers reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 50%: Study

Those workers who work remotely full-time emit less than half the greenhouse gas emissions of their office-bound counterparts, according to a new study. The study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focused on employees in the United States and provided insights into the environmental consequences of remote work arrangements.

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions for full-time remote workers

According to the study, employees in the United States who work solely from home are expected to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 54% when compared to their office-working colleagues. This reduction is the result of various causes, the most important of which are lower office energy consumption and the elimination of daily commuting emissions.

Problems for hybrid workers

The study did, however, reveal a key distinction for hybrid workers—those who divide their time between remote and office employment. These individuals did not reduce emissions to the same extent as full-time remote workers. In fact, one day of remote work each week only resulted in a 2% reduction in emissions.

This is because the energy savings from working from home were countered by variables such as increased non-commuting travel. Individuals who worked remotely two or four days per week, on the other hand, reported significant emissions savings of up to 29% when compared to their on-site counterparts.

Cornell University and Microsoft researchers modeled the expected greenhouse gas emissions of alternative work arrangements using large datasets, including Microsoft employee data. They looked at five types of pollution, including workplace and home energy usage. Surprisingly, the study discovered that information and communication technologies had little effect on individuals’ carbon footprints related to work, according to the Guardian.

While remote work gives a significant opportunity to reduce emissions, proper planning is required to maximize these benefits. According to the study, remote workers tend to increase non-work-related travel, such as driving and flying. Furthermore, residences are not always decarbonized, and some appliances may be less energy-efficient than their office equivalents.

The COVID-19 epidemic triggered a distant work revolution, with many people relocating from densely populated places to rural, low-density locations. However, this move may result in hybrid workers driving longer distances and increasing their usage of private vehicles, potentially increasing their carbon footprint.

While the study’s findings are limited to the United States, the underlying modeling and patterns are likely to apply to other regions, such as Europe and Japan.
