Scotland

Due to the threat, anaesthetic desflurane poses to the environment, Scotland is now the first country in the world to prevent its hospitals from using it. In essence, the gas is utilised to keep patients asleep during surgery. It may contribute to global warming, according to data from the National Health Service (NHS). Additionally, it asserts that gas has 2,500 times more potential for global warming than carbon dioxide. The use of this gas has decreased in hospitals all around the UK. According to the BBC, 40 hospital trusts in England and a few hospitals in Wales have stopped using it over the past few years.

NHS England is set to enact a comparable prohibition starting in 2024 that, like Scotland’s

According to media sources, NHS England is set to enact a comparable prohibition starting in 2024 that, like that of Scotland, forbids its usage unless absolutely necessary. Desflurane use in 2020 was examined by the NHS, and it was determined that prohibiting it in all NHS hospitals in England would reduce harmful emissions by the amount of electricity used to power 11,000 houses annually. In the upcoming years, it is thought that countries all around Europe also intend to take similar action.

The clinical lead for Scotland’s national green theatre programme, Dr Kenneth Barker, an anaesthetist, told the BBC that in 2017, he realised that the desflurane he used on a typical day’s work produced emissions equal to him driving 670 miles a day. Barker claimed that as soon as he became aware of the negative consequences, he stopped using it.

Inhaled anaesthetics used during general anaesthesia are thought to be responsible for 0.01% to 0.10% of the total global CO2 equivalent emissions

Inhaled anaesthetics used during general anaesthesia are thought to be responsible for 0.01 per cent to 0.10 per cent of the total global CO2 equivalent emissions, according to a study by the US-based National Center for Biotechnology Information. According to a study citation, an hour of surgery including the inhaled anaesthetic desflurane is comparable to travelling up to 470 kilometres. Also, it was suggested to anaesthesia professionals to practise caution by cutting back on unneeded atmospheric pollution.
