New Health Crisis Emerges as Chronic Conditions Grip America
In a concerning development for public health, nearly half of American adults are now affected by hypertension, with diabetes affecting more than one in ten, according to recent medical findings. This revelation comes amid growing concerns about the management of chronic health conditions in the United States.
The silent killer
Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and adjunct associate professor at George Washington University, has brought attention to this escalating health crisis in her recent communication with CNN.
According to her findings, nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure—defined as readings at or above 130/80 mmHg.
“More than 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes, and the proportion increases with age; among those 65 and older, about 29 percent have diabetes,” she revealed in her analysis.
Calling hypertension a “silent killer,” Dr Wen noted that along with diabetes, it’s a major contributor to heart diseases and strokes.
“Hypertension is frequently referred to as the ‘silent killer’ because it can cause significant lasting damage before people experience symptoms,” Dr. Wen emphasized. This characterization becomes particularly alarming when considering the condition’s far-reaching effects on multiple organ systems.
The severity of this health crisis extends beyond US borders. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that hypertension claims approximately 7.5 million lives globally each year.
The diabetes connection
The situation becomes more complex when considering diabetes’s role in this health crisis. “People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to develop heart disease compared with those who do not have the condition,” Dr. Wen warned.
A particularly troubling statistic from the US government’s Million Hearts initiative reveals that over 77% of the 119.9 million Americans with hypertension fail to maintain controlled blood pressure levels. Similarly, WHO data indicates that more than half of individuals aged 30 and above did not adhere to their diabetes medications in 2022.
Diagnosis and treatment

Dr. Wen outlines specific procedures for accurate blood pressure measurement, emphasizing proper positioning and equipment usage. She notes that multiple readings are typically required for a definitive diagnosis.
Hypertension is diagnosed through readings taken from a blood pressure cuff, Dr Wen said.
“If the initial blood pressure measurement is high, health care providers will take another measurement later during that clinic visit or will ask the patient to come in a separate time to confirm that the blood pressure remains elevated,” she added.
Make sure their blood pressure levels are checked correctly — “feet flat on the floor with legs uncrossed, having your back supported, wearing the appropriate cuff size and having the appropriate arm position,” she added.

The medical community offers various effective treatments for hypertension, including different classes of medications. These treatments work through various mechanisms, from reducing cardiac workload to managing sodium and water retention.
