First H3N2 death reported in India

Health department officials in Indian state of Karnataka announced on Friday that an 82-year-old from the Alur taluk in the Hassan district passed away on March 1 as a result of the illness. According to officials, Hire Gowda, the victim, was admitted to the hospital on February 24 and passed away on March 1. His lab results from March 3, two days following his passing, confirmed the H3N2 illness.

The state health and family welfare department issued advice in light of the rising number of H3N2 cases

Eregowda, district health officer, Hassan district, said, “On February 24, Hire Gowda was admitted to a hospital after he complained of cough and cold. His samples were collected for H3N2. On March 1, he died. We received his report on March 3, two days after his death which confirmed him for H3N2.” “We have tested the residents near Gowda’s residence. We have not found any further cases of H3N2. However, we are now on regular surveillance,” he added.

K Sudhakar, the health minister for Karnataka, had issued a call to calm down regarding the H3N2 virus on March 6. The state health and family welfare department issued advice for health officials on March 6 to avoid and control the spread of the infection in light of the rising number of H3N2 cases. The state’s district health officers (DHOs) were all given instructions to regularly monitor for influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and collect the necessary samples for diagnosis. The DHOs are supposed to make sure that the health facilities have a sufficient supply of all necessary doses of medications, according to a circular signed by Karnataka Health Commissioner Randeep D.
