US approves over-the-counter sale of hearing aids, move to benefit over 30mn adults

The Biden administration wants to make hearing aids less expensive and more readily available – and seeks the same for internet service and prescription drugs. The move is aimed at making hearing aids available to people with hearing problems. It is supposed to lower costs while looking for ways to develop better hearing devices.

The number of adults in the US who suffer from hearing-related issues is close to 30 million but only 20% of them use hearing aids. Hearing devices are often costly. Moreover, there are challenges in accessing them and there is a social stigma associated with them. It discourages people with hearing problems from buying them. Moreover, medical insurance often does not cover the costs.

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said, “Today’s action by the FDA represents a significant milestone in making hearing devices more cost-effective and accessible.”

The momentum to switch hearing aids from prescription to OTC has been growing for some time

.In 2017, President Trump signed the Over the Counter Hearing Aid Act authorizing OTC sales of hearing devices. It further allowed the Food and Drug Administration until 2020 to establish guidelines for direct sales of hearing aids. The FDA did not meet that timeline, however, and those regulations were never put forward.

During a Federal Trade Commission summit in April 2017, stakeholders voiced support for switching hearings devices to OTC, though some expressed trepidation. In 2016, manufacturers of hearing aids opposed the idea of making their devices available over the counter. They argued that hearing aids are more complex than other OTC aids. Such as reading glasses, and that professional input is needed for those requiring any type of hearing device.

After 60 days hearing devices will be available for over-the-counter sale

Right now when you need a hearing aid you can’t just walk into a pharmacy and pick one up over the counter, you have to get one from a doctor or a specialist. Not only does that make getting a hearing aid more inconvenient it makes it considerably more expensive. – President Biden

After the final rule is released, after 60 days hearing aids will be available for over-the-counter sale. Though not all forms and kinds of hearing aids will be available. However, the sale of certain air-conduction hearing aids for people 18 and older who suffer from mild or moderate hearing loss will be available in stores.

These air-conduction hearing aids are usually the first choice for people who suffer from hearing loss. It uses air as a medium to transfer sound into the ear canal. However, patients with severe hearing loss and those intended for use by children and teenagers under 18 will require a prescription from a doctor.

As per the new rule, certain hearing aids which would cost up to $5,000 would now reduce and cost around $2,800 a pair, according to FDA estimates. The FDA said that such over-the-counter hearing aids will be available in stores and also with online retailers as soon as mid-October.
