Detroit Powerball Ticket Wins $2 Million As Jackpot Climbs to $1.7 Billion

A $2 Million Payday in Detroit

One lucky Powerball player in Detroit is holding a ticket worth $2 million. The ticket, sold at Sunkiss Market on Puritan Street, matched all five white balls in the Wednesday, Sept. 3 drawing: 3, 16, 29, 61, and 69.

Normally, that combination would be worth $1 million. But because the player added the Power Play option—which doubles certain prizes—the windfall jumped to $2 million.

Winners have one year from the drawing date to claim prizes, according to the Michigan Lottery. That means the Detroit winner has until September 2026 to step forward.

Why This Win Stands Out

While a $2 million prize is life-changing, this Detroit ticket was just one bright spot in a much larger Powerball story. The Sept. 3 drawing didn’t produce a jackpot winner, which means the grand prize has surged to an estimated $1.7 billion.

To put that in perspective:

  • It’s now the third-largest jackpot in Powerball history.
  • The cash value is $770.3 million, before taxes.
  • The jackpot has been rolling over for weeks, feeding the frenzy of ticket sales nationwide.

The next chance to play for the billion-dollar prize is Saturday, Sept. 6.

How Power Play Works

The Detroit winner’s prize doubled thanks to the Power Play feature. For an extra $1 per ticket, Power Play multiplies non-jackpot winnings by 2, 3, 4, 5—or even 10 in some cases.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Match 5 without jackpot: $1 million, doubled to $2 million with Power Play.
  • Smaller matches: Can grow from just $4 to as much as $200,000, depending on the multiplier.

Without Power Play, the Detroit ticket would have stopped at $1 million. That small add-on turned into a seven-figure bonus.

Michigan’s History with Big Wins

Michigan has seen its fair share of Powerball and Mega Millions success. The most famous was in January 2021, when a group of players in Oakland County claimed a $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot.

Powerball alone has produced dozens of million-dollar winners in the state, with the Michigan Lottery reporting frequent wins thanks to strong ticket sales.

This Detroit prize adds another entry to the list and keeps Michigan in the national lottery spotlight.

Why the Jackpot Keeps Growing

Every time no one hits all six numbers, the jackpot grows. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are steep—1 in 292.2 million—which explains why rollovers are common.

When jackpots climb past the billion-dollar mark, they tend to attract casual players who don’t normally buy tickets. That, in turn, fuels even higher jackpots.

What Winners Should Do Next

Claiming $2 million is not as simple as walking up to the counter. Lottery experts and financial planners recommend a few steps for anyone holding a winning ticket:

  • Sign the ticket immediately to protect ownership.
  • Consult a financial advisor or attorney before claiming.
  • Consider anonymity rules: Michigan allows winners of more than $10,000 to remain anonymous if they choose.
  • Plan for taxes: Both federal and state taxes apply. A $2 million prize could shrink significantly after withholdings.

What’s Next for Players

The spotlight now shifts to Saturday’s drawing. With a $1.7 billion jackpot up for grabs, Powerball is once again dominating headlines and checkout counters.

Even if players don’t snag the top prize, secondary prizes—like the Detroit winner’s $2 million windfall—show there are other ways to cash in.

For Michigan players, this week’s story is proof that life-changing tickets don’t just happen in far-off states. Sometimes, they’re sold at the corner market down the street.

TL;DR

  • A Detroit Powerball ticket bought at Sunkiss Market won $2 million in the Sept. 3 drawing.
  • The ticket matched five white balls and doubled its $1 million prize with the Power Play option.
  • No jackpot winner means the grand prize climbs to $1.7 billion, the third largest in Powerball history.
  • Next drawing: Saturday, Sept. 6.
