Car Accident Facts And Statistics in Florida 2022 Explained

There are many reasons why car accidents occur: speeding, driver inattention, driving down the wrong lane, hit and runs, drunk driving, and drowsy driving. Whatever the reason, car accidents can be frustrating, devastating, and extremely stressful for the victims. Fasig | Brooks, a car accident attorney in Destin, says that no matter the cause of your car accident, working with a skilled and experienced attorney will help you recover the financial losses you suffered due to your injuries and damaged property.

You may be wondering how likely it is for a person to be involved in a car crash in Florida. Florida has the third-highest amount of car accidents, following California and Texas, so, unfortunately, it is very common in the Sunshine State.

Rise In Car Accidents

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found in 2020 that impaired driving, speeding, and failure to wear a seat belt were the top reasons people died in car accidents even though fewer drivers were on the road. Between 2005 and 2010, there was a small decrease in the number of car crashes in Florida. In 2010, the number of crashes went down even more. In 2013, though, there was a sudden rise in the number of crashes that occurred in Florida. Those numbers continued to rise steadily until 2019, when they finally started to decrease again. Incidents of crashes increased again in 2021.

What caused Florida car crashes to go down in 2019?

It’s believed that with the passing of the Wireless Communications While Driving Law (Section 316.305, Florida Statutes), law enforcement were able to stop drivers and issue them citations if they were caught texting while driving. The law prohibits operating a motor vehicle while manually typing or entering multiple letters, numbers, or symbols into a phone, tablet, or another wireless communication device for the purposes of texting, emailing, or messaging while driving, particularly in a school or work zone.

Traffic Crash Report

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ Annual Uniform Traffic Citation Report, there were 341,399 crashes in 2020, the most recent year that they have compiled statistics for. That averaged to 933 crashes per day in the state. Three thousand ninety-eight of those were fatal crashes that resulted in 3,332 individuals losing their lives. There were 12,462 incapacitating injury crashes that resulted in 15,614 individuals who suffered catastrophic injuries.

4,554 crashes were confirmed to be related to alcohol use. Of those crashes:

349 resulted in fatal crashes

384 individuals lost their lives due to impaired driving

229 of these crashes led to 393 people suffering from alcohol-confirmed incapacitating injuries

Of the 708 confirmed crashes related to drug use, 353 were fatal crashes that led to 384 fatalities

There have been a total of 8,045 motorcycle crashes reported. They resulted in 4,637 suffering from injuries, 517 motorcyclists losing their lives, and 1,747 motorcyclists suffering from incapacitating injuries. In Florida, helmets are required for all motorcycle riders under the age of 21 and are recommended for riders over 21.

No matter how you were injured, you should speak to an attorney about filing a personal injury claim. They can help you recover compensation for your losses and suffering.
