Marking their first release after a group hiatus, Wak Therapists are back with Bump Stock — a melodic, sociopolitically observational hit that makes for an addictive listen (no, but seriously, you’ll be playing this on repeat).
Bump Stock is a much more mellow tune than the average Wak track – but it’s got just as large and catchy a hook as you can get, and its thought-provoking, tongue-in-cheek lyricism will get your inner activist ticking.
The song was penned by band frontman Abe “The Pariah” Gladstone just after one of American’s many school shootings took place. The MC sat at his desk in HMP Channings Wood, turned the telly off, and wrote the vast majority of the lyrics right then and there. The track’s title refers to a ‘bump stock’, a gun mechanism that allows a rifle to fire repeatedly – and it’s something usually at the centre of these controversial shootings.
“It’s easy to sit safely in the UK and think about how stupid America’s gun control problem is, but it’s a delicate and precarious issue. We’re lucky we don’t have to deal with it. The fact is, when these atrocities occur, the market value of those weapons companies improves because people are scared… so the opportunity for profit through corruption for policymakers is obvious. Best described as Devon’s 21st century answer to the Beastie Boys or Rage Against The Machine, Wak Therapists are known for their conscientious and controversial bars, simplistic yet technically refined riffs, and irresistibly catchy hooks. The talented group recently signed with Red Tangent Records – a lived experience label that supports ex-prisoners in the music industry.
The single was recorded at Wak Therapists’ stomping ground Brazen Studios by the main man Ian, and produced by Aaron alongside two other exciting new groove hop releases. Give it a listen.
