Earth’s core leaking gold and precious metals, scientists discover

Gold and precious metals emerging from Earth’s core

A startling new study reveals that Earth’s core is leaking gold and other precious metals that have been locked away since the planet’s formation 4.5 billion years ago. Research on Hawaiian volcanic rocks shows these valuable materials are making their way to the surface, challenging previous assumptions about our planet’s inner workings.

Isotopic evidence reveals core material reaching surface

Scientists from the University of Göttingen conducted isotopic analysis of volcanic rocks from Hawaii, detecting unusually high levels of a specific ruthenium isotope that originates in Earth’s core. This finding provides the first direct evidence that core material, including gold and other precious metals, is migrating upward through the mantle.

“When the first results came in, we realized that we had literally struck gold! Our data confirmed that material from the core, including gold and other precious metals, is leaking into the Earth’s mantle above,” said geochemist Nils Messling from the University of Göttingen.

Implications for understanding Earth’s formation

The study, published in Nature, estimates that over 99.99% of Earth’s gold and precious metals remain trapped in the core, buried beneath 3,000 km of solid rock. The discovery that some of this material is escaping suggests the core is less isolated than previously believed.

Professor Matthias Willbold, co-author of the study, explained the significance: “Our findings not only show that Earth’s core is not as isolated as previously assumed. We can now also prove that huge volumes of super-heated mantle material, several hundred quadrillion metric tons of rock, originate at the core-mantle boundary and rise to Earth’s surface.”

New research opportunities emerge

The findings open new avenues for studying core-mantle interactions, with ruthenium isotopes serving as potential tracers for this previously hidden process. While the study confirms core material is reaching the surface through volcanic activity like that which formed Hawaii, researchers remain uncertain whether this leakage has been continuous throughout Earth’s history.

“Our findings open up an entirely new perspective on the evolution of the inner dynamics of our home planet,” the study noted. The research also suggests some of Earth’s gold deposits may have originated from this core leakage process, though further studies are needed to understand the full implications for planetary formation and resource distribution.
