Imagine hearing a deep, persistent humming noise at night that nobody around you can detect. Not your family. Not your neighbors. Not even sensitive recording equipment. For a small percentage of people around the world, that experience is very real. Known as the “Global Hum,” the phenomenon has puzzled scientists, frustrated communities, and fueled decades of speculation since reports first gained attention in the 1970s. Described as a low-frequency drone similar to a distant diesel engine, the sound is reportedly heard by only about 2% to 4% of the population.

And despite years of investigations, the mystery remains unresolved.

What is the Global Hum?

The Global Hum refers to reports of a persistent low-frequency sound heard in different parts of the world without a clearly identifiable source. The University of Southampton and NOAA have studied it and tried to find what’s causing the sound.

People who experience it, often called “Hearers,” describe the noise as:

  • A distant engine idling
  • A heavy electrical drone
  • A rhythmic vibration
  • A low mechanical rumble

Unlike ordinary background noise, many Hearers say the sensation feels partly physical, almost like a vibration pressing through walls, floors, and even their bodies.

Some compare it to living beside an invisible industrial machine that never fully switches off.

Who can hear the Global Hum?

One of the strangest aspects of the phenomenon is its selectivity.

In many reported cases:

  • One person hears the Hum clearly
  • Another person standing nearby hears nothing at all

Researchers studying the phenomenon have noted several recurring patterns:

  • Most have otherwise normal hearing
  • The sound is often stronger indoors
  • It becomes more noticeable late at night when background noise drops

Reported symptoms linked to the Hum

Some people claim the sound causes:

  • Difficulty concentrating

That has led some researchers to explore whether the Hum is:

Where has the Global Hum been reported?

Although reports exist worldwide, several locations became internationally famous for repeated complaints.

The Taos Hum in New Mexico

Taos became one of the best-known Hum hotspots during the 1990s after residents repeatedly complained about a mysterious low-frequency noise.

The issue became so prominent that it triggered:

  • Scientific investigations
  • Public hearings
  • Congressional interest

Despite extensive study, no definitive source was identified.

The Bristol Hum in the UK

In Bristol, hundreds of residents reported hearing rhythmic humming sounds beginning in the 1970s.

This became one of the earliest major modern Hum cases documented publicly.

The Windsor Hum in Canada

In Windsor, residents complained for years about powerful low-frequency vibrations.

Investigators linked part of the phenomenon to industrial activity on Zug Island near Detroit, particularly blast furnaces.

But even there, not every reported sound was fully explained.

What frequencies are involved?

Researchers estimate many reported Hum sounds fall roughly between:

10\text{ Hz} \text{ to } 80\text{ Hz}

That places them in the low-frequency range near the edge of human hearing.

Some geophysical theories involve even lower vibrations generated by oceanic and seismic activity:

0.01\text{ Hz} \text{ to } 0.5\text{ Hz}

These frequencies are often too low to be consciously heard under normal circumstances.

What causes the Global Hum?

Scientists still do not agree on a single explanation.

Instead, researchers have proposed multiple competing theories.

Theory 1: Earth itself may be generating the sound

One leading theory involves microseismic activity.

How this works

When ocean waves collide with coastlines or the seafloor, they generate tiny vibrations inside Earth’s crust.

These vibrations:

  • Travel long distances
  • Produce ultra-low-frequency energy
  • May interact with human auditory systems in unusual ways

Some researchers speculate that especially sensitive individuals may perceive certain low-frequency vibrations differently from most people.

Earth, in this theory, becomes less a silent planet and more a giant geological subwoofer humming beneath civilization.

Theory 2: Industrial infrastructure is producing the Hum

Another explanation points toward human-made infrastructure.

Possible sources include:

  • Electrical transformers
  • Gas pipelines
  • Industrial ventilation systems
  • Cooling fans
  • Factories
  • Data centers

Low-frequency sound waves travel unusually well through:

  • Concrete
  • Ground surfaces
  • Buildings

That means a source located miles away could potentially create vibrations detectable indoors.

Recent complaints in parts of Vineland even led some residents to suspect nearby data-center construction activity.

No confirmed direct link was established.

Theory 3: The Hum may originate inside the ear itself

Some scientists have explored biological explanations.

One theory involves:

  • Otoacoustic emissions

These are faint sounds naturally produced by the inner ear itself.

Most people never consciously notice them, but researchers speculate some individuals could perceive these sounds differently.

Is the Hum just tinnitus?

Probably not in the traditional sense.

Tinnitus usually produces:

  • Ringing
  • Buzzing
  • High-pitched tones

The Global Hum, by contrast, is typically described as:

  • Deep
  • Rhythmic
  • Vibrational
  • Mechanical

That distinction keeps researchers from simply categorizing the Hum as ordinary tinnitus.

Why scientists still cannot fully explain it

The Global Hum remains difficult to study because it exists near the limits of both:

  • Human hearing
  • Scientific measurement

Why the mystery persists

Researchers face several challenges:

  • Many sounds are too faint to record clearly
  • Low frequencies easily blend into background noise
  • Different locations may involve different causes
  • Human perception varies dramatically

There may not even be one single “Global Hum.”

What residents hear in one country could stem from:

The mystery may ultimately be less like one global phenomenon and more like dozens of overlapping whispers wearing the same name tag.

Could modern cities be making the Hum worse?

Some researchers believe urbanization may be increasing low-frequency environmental noise through:

Modern cities already produce enormous layers of barely noticeable vibration.

Most humans tune them out automatically.
