Virat Kohli has drawn a clear line around the final chapter of his ODI career.
The former India captain has confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be the last World Cup he plays for the country, giving the next global 50-over tournament a significance that extends well beyond another entry on his already extraordinary résumé.
Speaking ahead of India’s home ODI series against the West Indies, Kohli said the intensity of a 50-over World Cup is unlike anything else in international cricket. More importantly, he made it clear that he intends to approach his final campaign with one objective: winning the trophy.
“For me, it’s the last World Cup I’m going to play for India. And that is my motivation. Like, you know, to leave everything out there. And of course, the goal is absolutely to win the World Cup. And whatever it takes, I’m absolutely ready,” Kohli said in an interview with JioStar.
The declaration gives India fans a long runway to contemplate what could be Kohli’s final appearance on cricket’s biggest ODI stage.

Kohli’s comments are significant because his international career has already entered a more focused phase.
He retired from Test cricket in 2025 and from T20 internationals after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. The 50-over format is now the only international format in which he remains active.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India selected Kohli in India’s 15-member ODI squad for the three-match home series against the West Indies, which begins on September 27. Rohit Sharma has also been picked, while Shubman Gill remains the ODI captain.
The selection underlines India’s continued reliance on the experience of its two veteran batters as preparations build toward the 2027 World Cup.
For Virat Kohli, though, the horizon now appears defined. Rather than speaking about an open-ended ODI future, he has identified the 2027 tournament as the final World Cup he expects to contest for India.
From 2011 debut to a fifth World Cup
Kohli’s relationship with the ODI World Cup began in 2011, when he was still a young international batter attempting to establish himself in India’s star-studded lineup.
He played a supporting but important role in the final against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
After India lost Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar early while chasing 275, Kohli joined Gautam Gambhir at the crease. The pair added 83 runs for the third wicket before Kohli was dismissed for 35.
That partnership helped steady India’s chase before Gambhir and then MS Dhoni took control. India eventually won by six wickets, with Dhoni finishing unbeaten on 91.
More than 16 years later, Kohli is preparing for what would be his fifth ODI World Cup appearance.
The 2027 tournament will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The ICC has confirmed that the competition will return to Africa in October and November 2027 and expand to 14 teams.
If he makes India’s squad and takes the field, Kohli would move to five World Cup appearances, one behind Sachin Tendulkar’s record six.
The numbers behind Kohli’s ODI legacy
Kohli’s World Cup ambitions come against the backdrop of a statistical record that already places him among the most prolific ODI batters in history.
According to BCCI records, he has played 314 ODIs and scored 14,941 runs at an average of 58.59. He has also registered 54 ODI centuries and 79 fifties.
His 54 ODI hundreds are the most by any batter in the format, putting him ahead of Tendulkar’s 49.

Kohli’s reference to playing in foreign conditions is therefore particularly relevant. The tournament will require teams to adapt to different grounds, pitches, travel conditions, and match situations across the host countries.
For a player approaching the final stage of his international career, that makes the challenge as much about sustained preparation as individual brilliance.

India’s upcoming ODI series against the West Indies is part of the team’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup. The three matches are scheduled for September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram, September 30 in Guwahati, and October 3 in New Chandigarh.
Kohli’s inclusion means India’s selectors will have another opportunity to assess him in competitive ODI cricket with the next World Cup increasingly central to planning.
His return also comes alongside Rohit Sharma, giving India an unusual combination of experience at the top of the batting order.
At the same time, the team is building for a future in which younger players will eventually inherit the responsibility carried for years by Kohli and Rohit.
The 2026-27 ODI cycle is therefore likely to be about two things at once: maximizing the contribution of the veterans who remain and developing the next generation around them.

Virat Kohli has already lifted the ODI World Cup once, but that victory came at the beginning of his World Cup story rather than the end.
In 2011, he was the young batter learning what a World Cup final demanded. In 2027, should he make the squad and take the field, he would enter the tournament as one of the defining players of his generation.
