India Triumphs in Thrilling Final

Team India clinched the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup title, defeating South Africa by seven runs in a nail-biting final at Kensington Oval, Barbados. Both teams entered the final unbeaten, but India defended a total of 176 to emerge victorious.

High scores and successful chases

The tournament saw only four scores exceeding 200, indicating a generally low-scoring competition. West Indies posted the highest total with 218/5 against Afghanistan. Other notable scores include India’s 205/5 against Australia, Australia’s 201/7 against England, and Sri Lanka’s 201/6 against the Netherlands. The USA achieved the highest successful run chase, scoring 195 against Canada.

Leading wicket-takers

Fazalhaq Farooqi and Arshdeep Singh both claimed 17 wickets, setting a record for the most wickets in a single T20 World Cup edition. Jasprit Bumrah and Anrich Nortje followed closely with 15 wickets each. Farooqi and Rashid Khan were the only bowlers to take multiple four-wicket hauls.

Bowling records

Farooqi’s 5/9 against Uganda and Akeal Hosein’s 5/11 against Uganda were the only five-wicket hauls of the tournament. Tim Southee boasted the best economy rate among bowlers with at least five wickets (3.00), while Gulbadin Naib had the best strike rate (7.71).

Top run-scorers

Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan emerged as the leading run-scorer with 281 runs at an average of 35.12 and a strike rate of 124.33. He was closely followed by India’s Rohit Sharma (257 at 36.71) and Australia’s Travis Head (255 at 42.50). Gurbaz and Rohit each recorded three half-centuries.

Batting records

Nicholas Pooran’s 98 against Afghanistan was the highest individual score of the tournament. Other notable performances include Aaron Jones’s unbeaten 94 against Canada and Rohit’s 92 against Australia. Pooran also hit the most sixes (17), while Head led in fours (26), with Rohit trailing by one (25).

Lowest team totals

Thirteen teams were bowled out for under 100 runs, the most in any T20 World Cup edition. Uganda recorded the joint-lowest total in T20 WC history with 39 against West Indies. Other sub-50 totals included Uganda’s 40 against New Zealand and Oman’s 47 against England. West Indies’ 134-run victory over Uganda was the second-largest margin of victory in T20 WC history.

Record win

England set a new record for the biggest win in T20 World Cup history, bowling out Oman for 48 and winning with 101 balls to spare. They are the only team to win a T20 World Cup match with more than 100 balls remaining.

Century partnerships

Afghanistan’s openers, Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, recorded three century stands, including 154 against Uganda and 103 against New Zealand, becoming the first pair to achieve this feat in a single T20 WC edition. Their 154-run partnership was the second-highest opening stand in T20 WC history.
