Joe Root, James Anderson under the scanner, ECB to investigate post Ashes drinking session

The England Cricket Board (ECB) had opened an investigation into the post-Ashes drinking session between Australian and English players. Joe Root and James Anderson are under the scanner along with Travis Head, Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey, and others. After the completion of the Ashes 2021-22 in Hobart, several players were seen drinking late into the morning. The festivities were ‘too loud,’ so the cops had to intervene.

A video of the event has gone viral. The footage was purportedly shot by England’s assistant coach Graham Thorpe. And provided by the Sydney Morning Herald. Both teams’ players were reportedly drinking until 6 in the morning. They were forced to return to bed by authority officers, who interfered in the celebrations after another hotel guest complained about the noise. The players were celebrating their drinks and celebrating on the fourth floor of the Crowne Plaza hotel in Hobart,

“During the early hours of Monday morning, members of the England and Australia men’s teams shared a drink in the team areas of the hotel in Hobart,” the ECB said. “The hotel management received a noise complaint from a hotel guest. The local police attended the scene. The ECB will investigate further into the post-Ashes drinking. Until such times, we will make no further comment,” it added. “Lyon and Carey were still in their playing whites having capped off a 4-0 Ashes triumph over England the night before,” Fox Sports reported.

However, after England’s shambolic 4-0 loss in the Ashes, the footage has left the ECB in an untenable situation. Especially, with captain Root filmed drinking and celebrating with the Australian players. To avoid a clean sweep, England lost the first three Tests in a row before drawing the fourth. The England camp has conveyed regret for any trouble this has caused. While there has been no misconduct on the side of the players, the footage has come at an inopportune time for the ECB, following the team’s 4-0 bashing at the hands of Australia.
