World Athletics to allow transgender women to compete in female category: Report

World Athletics has requested that transgender women be permitted to compete in the female category in international track and field competitions, which is a controversial proposal that is likely to further polarise the sporting community.

According to reports, the leading athletics organization has begun consulting with its member federations on a suggested rule change. World Athletics has stated that restrictions will be tightened but that a complete ban will not be enacted, although a final decision has not yet been reached.

Rather than the current one-year requirement, the claimed trans athletes will need to stay below this barrier for two years

According to documents analyzed by British media, World Athletics has informed the members that its “preferred option” will be to permit athletes with variations in sex development (DSD) and transgender women to compete as they have up until now.

“This preferred option would allow significant (although not full) reduction of anaerobic, aerobic performances and body composition changes, while still providing a path for eligibility of trans women and 46 XY DSD individuals to compete in the female category.” The body added, “Putting forward a preferred option is the best way to gather constructive feedback, but this does not mean this is the option that will be presented to Council or indeed adopted.”

As a result, the current limit of five nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) for transwoman athletes will be reduced by half to 2.5 nmol/L. In addition, rather than the current one-year requirement, the claimed trans athletes will need to stay below this barrier for two years.

Last year, British Triathlon made history by becoming the first British sporting organization to outright prohibit transgender athletes from competing in the women’s division. Instead, a brand-new category called “open” was created for them to participate in.

The debate remains centered around fairness and inclusion, whether it is right to let transgender athletes participate in women’s competitions

Similarly to this, the world governing organization for swimming, FINA, declared a ban on transgender athletes from competing in women’s events last year. Transgender women are not allowed to play women’s international sports, according to World Rugby, which made the announcement in 2020.

The debate remains centered around fairness and inclusion, whether it is right to let transgender athletes participate in women’s competitions.  Males’ increased muscular mass, bone density, and hemoglobin levels during puberty are all major performance enhancers, according to a number of studies. Transgender athletes still have an unfair advantage over biological females after undergoing various hormone therapy to lower their level of testosterone.
