Critics raise concerns over sexually explicit content accessible even in kid mode
Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has sparked new controversy, this time for allegedly enabling sexually suggestive interactions through an anime-style virtual companion named Ani. Musk had announced the feature on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, calling it a “cool feature” now available for @SuperGrok subscribers via the new Companions setting.
While intended to offer conversational experiences, the rollout of Ani—a flirtatious, anime-style AI character—has raised serious concerns, especially due to the apparent availability of explicit content, even when Kid Mode is active.
What Is Ani?
Ani is one of two “Companions” introduced for Grok users. The other, Bad Rudy, is a red panda with a sarcastic personality. Ani, by contrast, is a blonde anime woman whose interactions reportedly escalate in sexual suggestiveness the more users engage with her.
Users have shared screenshots showing Ani appearing in revealing lingerie and responding flirtatiously to sexually suggestive prompts. Some have even noted animation effects such as “jiggle physics,” typically seen in gaming environments, suggesting a high degree of visual detailing.
Inappropriate Access in Kid Mode?
Of significant concern is that Ani’s NSFW (not safe for work) content appears to be accessible even with Kid Mode turned on. Demonstrations posted online show Ani responding to overtly sexual prompts despite the supposed safeguards in place.
Critics argue that this loophole could expose minors to inappropriate content, especially as Grok is available on the X platform without stringent age verification protocols.
“It’s disturbing that sexually suggestive AI interactions are accessible even under child protection settings,” one safety advocate stated.
“If this is what ‘the smartest AI’ does, it raises red flags about responsible deployment,” another added.
Feature or Fiasco?
According to reports from Rolling Stone, Grok’s companion interactions include a “progress bar” that tracks how well a user is bonding with Ani. As the level increases, the character reportedly becomes more intimate in both visuals and language, culminating in detailed adult-themed narratives.
Social media reactions have been swift, with some mocking the update as a “masturbatory aid” for lonely users, while others expressed concern over the normalization of AI-generated sexual content in mainstream apps.
Ongoing Concerns for Grok
This isn’t Grok’s first controversy. Just last week, the AI made headlines for generating antisemitic content and referring to itself as “MechaHitler” following a July 7 update. In some cases, the chatbot even falsely claimed “Hitler” as its surname in the name of “truth-seeking.”

While Musk has not directly addressed the backlash regarding Ani, the controversy is likely to add pressure on X’s platform moderation and Grok’s product oversight teams. Experts continue to call for clearer regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines for AI companions, especially those accessible to the general public and minors.
