Mahrah Al Nahyan

Mahrah Al Nahyan, a 32-year-old woman linked to Abu Dhabi’s ruling family through marriage, has been sentenced by a London court after admitting to child neglect in a case involving a three-year-old found unattended near moving traffic while she lay unconscious on a street.

Al Nahyan pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect at Southwark Crown Court. On October 13, 2026, she received a two-year community order requiring rehabilitation and was ordered to pay £6,114 in fines and costs.

The case attracted attention because of her connection to the Emirati royal family and the circumstances in which the toddler was found. The court heard that members of the public intervened after noticing the barefoot child playing near a busy road.

Who is Mahrah Al Nahyan?

Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, is associated with Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan family through marriage. The family has played a central role in the political leadership of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

She is not widely known for holding a public political position. Her name came to broader attention following the London court case and reports about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to reporting on the court proceedings, Al Nahyan receives a monthly allowance of approximately £8,000. However, the legal case focused on her responsibility for the child and the risk created when the toddler was left without supervision.

The child’s relationship to Al Nahyan has not been publicly disclosed in the reporting reviewed.

What happened in west London?

The incident occurred on June 13, 2026, in West London. Al Nahyan was found slumped against railings alongside an unconscious man, while the three-year-old child she had been caring for was nearby with a scooter.

The toddler was barefoot and appeared to be close to moving traffic. Members of the public raised the alarm, looked after the child and remained at the scene until emergency services arrived.

Al Nahyan reportedly remained unresponsive for about 30 minutes. When she regained consciousness, she questioned why bystanders were concerned about the situation, according to accounts presented during the court proceedings.

Prosecutor Rio Pahlavanpour told the court that members of the public had intervened because the child appeared to be in immediate danger near the road.

The court also heard that the toddler ran towards the road while chasing a piece of paper, prompting a bystander to intervene. The judge said the intervention of strangers had helped prevent a potentially serious outcome.

What did the court hear about drug use?

The court heard that Al Nahyan had used cocaine in the days leading up to the incident. Drug paraphernalia was reportedly discovered among her belongings during a search, although no illegal substances were found.

Her defence lawyer, Stephen Vullo KC, told the court that she had not taken cocaine on the day she was found unconscious. He attributed her condition to exhaustion following drug use in the preceding days.

The defence also told the court that Al Nahyan had entered treatment for drug addiction and had remained drug-free since beginning the programme.

Judge Jeremy Johnson KC criticised the circumstances that left the toddler unattended. He said Al Nahyan had shown recklessness and disregard for the child’s safety by leaving the child barefoot on the street while she was incapacitated.

The court’s concerns centred on the danger the toddler faced, rather than whether an injury had actually occurred.

What sentence did Mahrah Al Nahyan receive?

Al Nahyan was sentenced to a two-year community order that includes a rehabilitation requirement. She was also ordered to pay £6,114 in fines and costs.

A community order allows an offender to serve a court-imposed sentence in the community under specified conditions rather than in prison. Failure to comply with its requirements can result in further court action.

The sentence followed her guilty plea to the child-neglect charge. The court heard that she had already entered a rehabilitation programme at the Priory clinic in Woking, Surrey.

Her lawyer said she had shown “significant remorse and resolve to overcome her addiction” and acknowledged that she had made a serious mistake.

The defence outlined plans for her to complete a three-month treatment programme before continuing care as a day patient in the Guildford area. She also intended to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

How did the judge assess the risk to the child?

During sentencing, the judge stressed that the absence of physical injury did not mean the incident was harmless. The toddler had been left in circumstances where the risk of serious harm was substantial.

The judge warned that the child could have run into traffic, become lost or been harmed by a stranger. The toddler could also have become distressed after finding Al Nahyan and the other man unconscious.

The intervention of members of the public was a key part of the account presented to the court. Their actions ensured that the child received attention until authorities arrived.

The case illustrates the legal responsibility placed on adults caring for young children, particularly when their actions leave a child exposed to an immediate and foreseeable danger.

Why the case has attracted attention

The proceedings have drawn international interest because Al Nahyan is connected through marriage to Abu Dhabi’s ruling family. Reports about her monthly allowance and rehabilitation have also raised questions about the contrast between her financial circumstances and the legal consequences of the incident.

However, the court’s decision was based on the admitted offence and the circumstances involving the toddler, not her family connections.

Al Nahyan has received a community sentence with a rehabilitation requirement rather than a prison term. Her ongoing treatment and compliance with the order will form part of the next stage following sentencing.

The case has also highlighted the role of members of the public in recognising potential danger and helping protect a child while emergency services are contacted.
