iPhone 18

Apple’s latest iPhone lineup has arrived with a familiar question for global shoppers: where can you buy the newest model for the least money? Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, on September 9, 2026. In India, the new Pro models start considerably higher than their US counterparts after currency conversion.

A comparison of Apple’s advertised prices across major markets shows that the US is among the cheapest places to buy the new lineup, while India sits toward the expensive end of the comparison.

iPhone 18 Pro price: US vs India and other countries

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the US for the 256GB model. Apple lists the Indian starting price at ₹164,900 for the same storage tier.

Using the exchange-rate conversions cited in the international comparison, the US price works out to roughly ₹1.14 lakh, significantly below the Indian sticker price.

Here is how the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro compares:

CountryStarting priceApprox. price in INR
US$1,199₹1.14 lakh
Japan¥219,800₹1.37 lakh
ChinaCNY 9,999₹1.42 lakh
UAEAED 5,099₹1.32 lakh
UK£1,199₹1.54 lakh
Germany€1,449₹1.61 lakh
India₹1,64,900₹1.65 lakh

Among these markets, the US has the lowest advertised price before taking taxes, payment costs or other purchasing expenses into account.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: where is it cheapest?

The larger iPhone 18 Pro Max follows a similar pattern.

It starts at $1,299 in the US, compared with ₹179,900 in India. Other markets, including Japan and the UAE, also come in below India’s price after conversion.

CountryStarting priceApprox. price in INR
US$1,299₹1.24 lakh
Japan¥239,800₹1.49 lakh
ChinaCNY 10,999₹1.56 lakh
UAEAED 5,499₹1.42 lakh
UK£1,299₹1.67 lakh
Germany€1,599₹1.77 lakh
India₹1,79,900₹1.80 lakh

The gap can become even more significant as buyers move to higher storage capacities. The new Pro models are available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB options.

What about Apple’s first foldable iPhone Duo?

The price difference becomes particularly striking with the iPhone Duo.

Apple has priced the foldable at $1,999 in the US. India’s starting price is ₹299,900, while the device starts at €2,299 in Germany, £1,999 in the UK, CNY 15,999 in China, Â¥364,800 in Japan and AED 8,499 in the UAE.

On the supplied currency conversions, the US again comes out substantially cheaper than India.

CountryStarting priceApprox. price in INR
US$1,999₹1.90 lakh
UAEAED 8,499₹2.20 lakh
ChinaCNY 15,999₹2.27 lakh
Japan¥364,800₹2.27 lakh
Germany€2,299₹2.55 lakh
UK£1,999₹2.57 lakh
India₹2,99,900₹3.00 lakh

The Duo represents Apple’s first entry into the foldable smartphone market and is positioned as its most dramatic iPhone design change in years. Reuters reported that the device starts at $1,999 in the US.

Is buying an iPhone in the US always cheaper for Indians?

Not necessarily.

The simple currency conversion tells only part of the story. US advertised prices can be affected by sales tax at the state or local level, while an overseas buyer also needs to consider travel costs, exchange-rate fluctuations and any applicable customs or import rules when bringing the phone into India.

Warranty and service considerations can matter too. A model purchased in another country may have differences in cellular compatibility, SIM configuration or regional features, depending on the specific device.

There is also the practical question of whether the savings are large enough to justify buying abroad. For a person already travelling to the US, the price difference may be attractive. Making a separate trip solely to purchase an iPhone is a very different calculation.

Why are iPhones more expensive in India?

Apple’s international pricing is influenced by more than currency conversion.

Taxes, duties, local operating costs, distribution expenses and regional pricing strategies all contribute to the final retail price. Apple also adjusts prices across markets rather than simply converting its US price into local currencies.

That is why the same iPhone can have noticeably different prices even after accounting for exchange rates.

The cheapest iPhone market depends on the model

For the markets compared here, the US offers the lowest advertised starting price for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo after currency conversion. Japan and the UAE are also relatively inexpensive compared with India, while Germany and the UK are closer to Indian pricing.

For Indian buyers, however, the cheapest headline price is not automatically the cheapest final cost. Taxes, import rules, warranty coverage, currency conversion charges and travel expenses can narrow the gap considerably.

The new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are scheduled to open for pre-orders in India on September 12, with availability beginning September 18. Apple’s Indian store lists the iPhone Duo for pre-order later in October.

Fact-checking note: International iPhone prices change with exchange rates, taxes, and regional pricing. The rupee figures above are approximate conversions based on the cited comparisons and should not be treated as the final amount an Indian consumer would necessarily pay abroad.
