Snapchat’s climate strategy to cut emissions and reach carbon neutrality

Snap Inc,the parent company of Snapchat announced its new strategy to lower its emissions on Monday in the annual CitizenSnap report. Approaching the steps taken to reduce the environmental impact of the company’s operation, the company declared itself carbon neutral.

Snapchat takes the Paris climate agreement seriously

“They’re going to be living with the brunt of these impacts for many generations,” said Dom Perella, Snap’s COO. “Because it impacts our stakeholders… we want to make a difference,” he added. The company plans to reduce emissions by 25 percent from its business by 2025. They also plan to buy renewable and efficient forms of energy for their operations.

Snap also claims that it is not just carbon neutral right now but will be for its operations since its inception in 2011. The company has calculated and managed to offset its emissions for the past ten years!

They further plan to reduce emissions generated from business travel and goods and services by 35 percent. They plan to achieve this by choosing climate-friendly travel modes and convincing vendors to lower their emissions. These are not empty promises. Determined for the cause, Snap revealed that they’re working with the Science-Based Targets initiative. It ensures that they’re working hard to meet the outlined goals of the Paris Agreement’s climate change treaty.

Another step taken by Snap is its interest in Forestry projects! Since forests are considered natural carbon sinks, they absorb over 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide every year alone! These forests will help avoid destruction in the future.

Snapchat is not just a social media company

Did you know that Snap inc. not only dabbles in social media but also on sunglasses. ‘Spectacles‘-the Snap firm will be rethinking its product design and materials to ensure that they are more eco-friendly. It is a fresh change in the time of fast fashion. The green policy is one of the first of its kind and revolutionary. It will surely put them up against other brands like Apple, Nike, and Puma that have received flak for using questionable suppliers. Snap inc has promised consumers that its supply chain will also be following the new green policies.

Most big tech companies and manufacturers use a third-party supplier. They are known to be hard to monitor and implement. Snap plans to remove the barrier by getting its third-party companies to abide by its “stringent Supplier Code of Conduct.”

Overhauling its facilities by 2025 might seem like a big shot. However, Snap plans to implement additional methods. It will ensure that emissions lower and, that it embraces various climate-friendly options.
