Cannabis plants found in the Parliament garden
According to a report by the Guardian, cannabis seedlings surfaced in the parliament’s rose garden. If you’re wondering how they made it to New Zealand‘s parliament, protestors are the answer. Protestors had occupied the parliament area for around a week which ended in a riot. Earlier this week, a Wellington resident noted small green leaves of the cannabis plant and reported it on social media.
The Wellingtonian who wishes to remain anonymous stated that he found it “quite funny”, he found the “special plants” when he was eating lunch, along with marigolds and a brassica. “I may or may not have inhaled back in uni, and so had a fairly good idea of what kind of plants were sprouting just meters away from the debating chamber. It is a shame to see them weeded up – although the law is the law, despite 48 percent of voters at the referendum thinking NZ needed a change regarding cannabis laws,” he stated.
Weed the weed
Later a groundskeeper from the building confirmed. He stated they were “a few cannabis seedlings,” probably left behind by the protestors. “A lot of seeds were scattered around, among other things left from the protesters,” he stated. A security guard stated that this was “probably the first cannabis that has ever been planted on parliament grounds”.
According to a protestor, they were responsible for scattering seeds. They added that “many more will likely germinate for years to come”. Following Trevor Mallard, the speaker’s appeal for weeding the weed. Since then, they have been uprooting and destroying illegal plants. Meanwhile, according to the RNZ, a man looking to take a couple of the remaining ones home was sad about their removal. Additionally, some protesters unaware of the samplings confirmed that they will look around to find what else they can find.
