Bangladesh Labour Wing Leader Shot In Head Days After Sharif Usman Hadi’s Killing

Bangladesh’s volatile political situation took another violent turn on Monday after a senior labour wing leader was shot in the head in Khulna, just days after the killing of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi triggered nationwide unrest. The latest attack has heightened fears of escalating political violence ahead of the country’s next general election.

Who was targeted in the Khulna shooting?

According to Bangladeshi media reports, Muhammad Motaleb Shikder, a prominent labour wing leader of the National Citizen Party, was shot by unknown assailants in the Sonadanga area of Khulna on Monday morning.

Shikder was a key organizer and convener of the Khulna division of the party’s labour wing, Jatiya Sramik Shakti. Party workers described him as a senior grassroots leader with significant organizational influence in the region.

Where and how did the attack take place?

Local daily Prothom Alo reported that the shooting occurred around 11:45 am near a house in Sonadanga, behind Gazi Medical College Hospital. Police said the attackers fled the scene immediately after opening fire.

Sonadanga police inspector Animesh Mondal told reporters that Shikder was shot in the head by unidentified gunmen. Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of attackers or the weapon used.

What is Shikder’s medical condition?

Following the attack, Shikder was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital and later shifted to a diagnostic centre for a CT scan to assess the extent of his head injuries.

Another Bangladeshi newspaper, Kaler Kantha, citing hospital sources, reported that he had been shot on the left side of his head and was bleeding heavily when brought in for treatment. Doctors reportedly began emergency medical procedures immediately. No official update on his current condition has been released so far.

How is this linked to Sharif Usman Hadi’s killing?

The shooting comes just days after the killing of Sharif Usman Hadi, a prominent student leader whose death sparked widespread protest-related violence across Bangladesh.

Hadi, a key figure in last year’s student-led movement that culminated in the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was shot in the head by masked gunmen on December 12 during an election campaign event in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area.

The 32-year-old Inqilab Mancha spokesperson later died while undergoing treatment in Singapore. He was also a candidate for the upcoming February 12 general elections.

What has the government said so far?

The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus announced nationwide mourning following Hadi’s death and pledged to bring those responsible to justice. Authorities said fresh violence erupted in Dhaka and other major cities after news of Hadi’s killing spread.

In Hadi’s case, police have arrested the parents, wife, and a female acquaintance of the prime suspect, Faisal Karim Masud. However, investigators have said they are still unsure of Masud’s whereabouts.

What is the status of the investigation into Shikder’s shooting?

After Monday’s attack in Khulna, police admitted they were still in the dark regarding the motive behind the shooting or the identities of those involved. An immediate manhunt has been launched to trace the assailants.

Police officials confirmed that Shikder was later moved within Khulna Medical College Hospital facilities for further imaging to determine the severity of his injuries.

Why does this attack raise broader concerns

The back-to-back shootings of political and student leaders underscore growing fears about law and order in Bangladesh at a critical political juncture. The country is preparing for its first general election since Sheikh Hasina’s removal, and repeated acts of violence risk deepening instability.

Observers note that targeted attacks on organizers and protest leaders could further inflame tensions on the streets, especially if investigations fail to produce swift results.

What happens next?

Security agencies are under pressure to demonstrate progress in both investigations. Any delay or perceived lack of transparency could intensify public anger and political confrontation in the days ahead.
