French Teen Fined in Singapore After Viral ‘Straw-Licking’ Social Media Stunt

A French teenager has been fined by a Singapore court after pleading guilty to a public nuisance charge stemming from a social media stunt in which he licked a drinking straw and placed it back into a vending machine dispenser.

The case attracted widespread attention after a video of the incident circulated online, prompting public criticism and an investigation by Singaporean authorities.

What Happened?

Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 19, admitted to filming and posting a video that showed him licking a drinking straw before placing it back into the dispenser of an orange juice vending machine.

The incident occurred on March 12 and was later shared on Instagram, where it gained widespread attention.

The video prompted complaints from members of the public and led to his arrest by Singaporean authorities.

Court’s Decision

On July 30, a Singapore court fined Maximilien S$600 (approximately US$465) after he pleaded guilty to one count of public nuisance.

Judge Kelly Ho ruled that, considering the defendant’s age and the nature of the offense, alternatives such as probation or a community-based sentence were not appropriate.

The fine concluded the criminal proceedings.

Why Did Prosecutors Support a Fine?

Prosecutors agreed that a financial penalty was appropriate.

They told the court that the offense fell at the “lower end” of seriousness because:

  • No member of the public used the contaminated straw.
  • There was no evidence that anyone suffered harm.
  • The defendant pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

While prosecutors acknowledged that the act compromised hygiene, they said there was no evidence of actual injury or illness resulting from the incident.

Defense: Teen Expressed Remorse

Defense lawyer Kalidass Murugaiyan told the court that Maximilien was genuinely remorseful.

According to the defense, the teenager had been counseled by his family following the incident and accepted responsibility for his actions.

The lawyer also argued that probation or a community-based sentence would have been difficult because Maximilien is scheduled to return to France in September to continue his education and his family was unable to arrange a suitable guardian in Singapore.

Following the hearing, Maximilien and his parents left the courthouse without commenting to reporters.

Singapore’s Strict Public Hygiene Laws

Singapore is widely known for its strict enforcement of laws relating to public cleanliness, hygiene, and public order.

Authorities have long emphasized that maintaining public hygiene is an important aspect of public health, and offenses affecting shared public spaces may result in criminal penalties.

The country’s legal system frequently imposes fines for conduct considered likely to inconvenience or endanger the public.

Why This Matters

The case illustrates how actions intended as social media pranks can carry legal consequences, particularly in jurisdictions with stringent public health and public-order regulations.

As online challenges and viral content continue to influence behavior, authorities in many countries have increasingly warned that creating content for social media does not exempt individuals from compliance with local laws.

Travelers are also regularly advised to familiarize themselves with local regulations, as conduct that may be viewed as a prank elsewhere can constitute a criminal offense under another country’s legal system.

The Bottom Line

A Singapore court fined a 19-year-old French national S$600 after he pleaded guilty to a public nuisance charge for posting a video showing himself returning a licked drinking straw to a vending machine dispenser. Prosecutors said no member of the public used the straw and no harm was reported, while the court concluded that a monetary penalty was appropriate given the circumstances and the defendant’s early guilty plea.

TL;DR

  • A 19-year-old French national was fined S$600 (about US$465) by a Singapore court.
  • He pleaded guilty to a public nuisance charge after posting a video showing him returning a licked straw to a vending machine dispenser.
  • Prosecutors said no member of the public used the contaminated straw and there was no evidence of harm.
  • The court imposed a fine rather than probation or a community-based sentence.
  • The incident highlights Singapore’s strict approach to public hygiene and public-order offenses.
