Australian Girl, 9, 'Mistakenly' Killed In Pakistan Police Shooting During Anti-Robbery Operation; Investigation Underway

A family vacation turned tragic when a 9-year-old Australian girl was fatally shot after Pakistani police opened fire on her family’s rental vehicle during an anti-robbery operation in Punjab province.

The incident, which occurred after the family completed the Hajj pilgrimage and traveled to Pakistan to visit relatives, has sparked calls for a transparent investigation from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and prompted Pakistani authorities to launch a criminal inquiry into the officers involved.

Officials say the shooting resulted from a mistaken identification during an armed confrontation with robbery suspects. The girl’s father disputes that version of events, saying police opened fire first.

What happened?

According to Pakistani authorities, the incident took place late Wednesday night in Chakwal district, Punjab province.

Hania Ahmed, her parents, and her 10-year-old brother were traveling in a rental vehicle after returning from the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The family had reportedly been on their way to visit relatives when two armed men riding a motorcycle intercepted their vehicle and attempted a robbery.

Police said Hania’s father contacted emergency services during the incident, prompting officers from Punjab’s Crime Control Department (CCD) to respond.

What happened next is now at the center of the investigation.

Why did police open fire?

According to Punjab police, officers arrived as the robbery suspects fled on a motorcycle while the family’s rental car simultaneously drove away from the scene.

Police said an officer mistakenly believed the escaping vehicle was being driven by the suspects.

Authorities stated that officers opened fire after assessing that the alleged robbers were attempting to flee.

Police also claim investigators believe the robbery suspects fired first during the encounter.

However, those details remain under investigation.

The family disputes the police account

Hania’s father has publicly challenged the official version of events.

In an interview with SBS Urdu, he said police opened fire before any exchange involving the robbery suspects.

His account differs significantly from the explanation provided by the Punjab police.

An image circulating on social media appears to show the family’s vehicle riddled with bullet holes, although its authenticity has not been independently verified.

Investigators are expected to examine forensic evidence, witness testimony, emergency call records, and the body of evidence collected from the scene to determine exactly how the shooting unfolded.

Who was injured?

The gunfire critically injured:

  • Hania Ahmed, 9.
  • Her father, Adeel Ahmed.
  • Her 10-year-old brother, Aafan Ahmed.

All three were transported to a nearby hospital.

Hania later died from her injuries.

Authorities have not released updated information regarding the condition of the surviving family members.

What action have Pakistani authorities taken?

Punjab police have acknowledged that established operational procedures were not properly followed during the incident.

The force said there was “absolutely no justification” for deviating from standard protocols.

Authorities have since:

  • Arrested the officer who fired the fatal shots.
  • Filed murder charges against the officer.
  • Opened a formal departmental investigation.
  • Begun reviewing the conduct of other officers present.

Police also identified two alleged robbery suspects as Muhammad Abbas and Muhammad Fayyaz.

According to authorities, both men were later killed in a separate police encounter while allegedly attempting to escape.

Those circumstances have not been independently verified.

Australia’s response

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the circumstances surrounding Hania’s death require a full and transparent investigation.

Speaking to reporters in Canberra, Albanese said the family deserves clear answers about how the shooting occurred.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the grieving family and remains in contact with Pakistani authorities.

The case has also drawn attention within Australia’s Pakistani community, where many have expressed shock over the incident.

Why is the case receiving international attention?

The shooting has become an international story because it involves:

  • An Australian child killed overseas.
  • Conflicting accounts between police and eyewitnesses.
  • Questions surrounding police use of force.
  • Diplomatic engagement between Australia and Pakistan.
  • A criminal investigation into law enforcement officers.

Incidents involving foreign nationals often receive heightened scrutiny, particularly when governments call for independent investigations.

What happens next?

The investigation is expected to focus on several key questions:

  • Did officers correctly identify the family’s vehicle?
  • Who fired the first shots?
  • Were police procedures properly followed?
  • Could officers have used less-lethal tactics?
  • What role, if any, did the robbery suspects play in the exchange?

The findings could determine whether additional officers face disciplinary or criminal action.

Investigators are also likely to examine radio communications, ballistic evidence, witness statements, and emergency response records.

The bigger picture

The death of Hania Ahmed has raised renewed questions about police operational procedures during high-risk incidents involving civilians.

As investigations continue, the central issue remains whether the fatal shooting resulted from a tragic mistake during an active police response or from failures in decision-making that could have been avoided.

With both Australian and Pakistani authorities closely monitoring the case, the outcome of the investigation is likely to draw significant public attention in both countries.

TL;DR

  • Nine-year-old Australian citizen Hania Ahmed was killed during a police shooting in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
  • Pakistani police say officers mistakenly believed the family’s rental vehicle was being driven by armed robbery suspects.
  • Hania’s father disputes the official account, alleging police opened fire before any suspects fired.
  • One police officer has been arrested on murder charges, and a formal investigation is underway.
  • Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for a transparent inquiry into the incident.
