A strange brain disease in the Canadian province of New Brunswick has health specialists alarmed. According to the New York Post, the number of sufferers is growing. According to reports, the disease causes neurological symptoms such as hallucinations, eye issues, muscle wasting, memory loss, and strange movements. The same symptoms were observed in a cluster of 48 patients in 2015. According to the New York Post, several health professionals and residents believe the number of patients this time is significantly larger, maybe exceeding 200. Furthermore, an exceptionally large number of cases have been observed in the younger population. Typically, children do not exhibit indications of dementia or other neurological issues.
“I am particularly concerned about the increase in numbers of young-onset and early-onset neurological syndrome,” said Dr Alier Marrero as quoted by The New York Post. Dr. Marrero said this in a letter dated January 30, 2023, to New Brunswick’s chief medical officer and the chief federal public health officer. “Over the past year, I have been following 147 cases, between the ages of 17 and 80 years old. Out of those, 57 are early-onset cases and 41 are young-onset cases,” the letter from Marrero reportedly said. According to the Daily Mail, there have been nine deaths connected to the unexplained disease as of 2021.
Experts believe that it is linked to pesticides used mostly in rural regions
Environmental pollutants were being investigated as a possible cause of this brain disease by government officials. The probe, however, was abruptly halted in 2021. “People who were part of this cluster displayed symptoms that varied significantly from case to case, and there was no evidence of a shared common illness or a syndrome of unknown cause,” the government said in its final report. The government said that it was concluding its investigation. However, many people who are not part of the government are still investigating the condition and believe that it is linked to pesticides used mostly in rural regions.
Glyphosate, an agricultural herbicide, has recently come under scrutiny. According to reports, the chemical contains phosphorus, which can increase blur-gree algae, a cyanobacterium that can cause disease in humans and even kill animals. Those investigating the mysterious illness now are insisting that the number of patients is at least 200. They reportedly say that some of the patients have tested positive for multiple environmental toxins at levels up to 40 times higher than the average limit.
