China: 12 Dead After Fireworks Shop Blast in Xiangyang, Second Incident in Days

A powerful explosion at a fireworks shop in Xiangyang has killed 12 people, the second fatal blast in China within days as Lunar New Year celebrations peak across the country.

Authorities say the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in Zhengji town. The cause remains unknown, but officials had already warned that fireworks pose one of the biggest seasonal safety risks during the Spring Festival.

What happened in the Xiangyang blast?

State media reported the explosion at around 2:00 pm local time at a fireworks and firecracker retail shop in Hubei province.

Firefighters contained the blaze by approximately 3:30 pm.

Immediate impact

  • 12 confirmed deaths
  • damage across about 50 square meters
  • emergency response within 90 minutes
  • investigation ongoing

This was the second explosion in days

The Xiangyang incident follows a similar blast at a fireworks shop in Jiangsu earlier in the week that killed eight people and injured two.

Clusters of accidents during major holidays are not unusual because production, transport, storage, and consumer use all peak simultaneously.

Why fireworks accidents rise during Lunar New Year

Firecrackers are traditionally used to ward off bad luck and celebrate the new year, creating a sharp surge in demand.

China’s annual holiday migration, known as chunyun, moves hundreds of millions of people in a short period. That massive travel wave drives temporary markets and rapid distribution chains.

Risk factors

  • temporary roadside stalls
  • crowded storage areas
  • rushed logistics
  • untrained handling
  • illegal products entering supply chains

Common causes of fireworks shop explosions

Pyrotechnics contain oxidizers and combustible powders that can ignite from minimal triggers.

Typical ignition sources

  • overheating
  • static electricity
  • friction during packing
  • electrical sparks
  • mixing incompatible materials
  • poor ventilation

Once one item ignites, chain reactions occur quickly because fireworks are stored in bulk.

Government warnings and regulation

Chinese authorities regularly impose partial bans in dense urban areas and designate approved discharge zones. Enforcement varies widely, particularly in smaller towns where fireworks sales remain economically important.

Officials issued a safety notice this week warning that fireworks remain among the most dangerous hazards during the holiday.

Safety advice for the public

Authorities commonly recommend:

  • buy licensed products only
  • light fireworks outdoors
  • keep distance from buildings
  • supervise children closely
  • never store fireworks indoors

The broader context

The tragedy highlights a recurring dilemma: a centuries-old tradition colliding with modern population density. As celebrations grow larger and cities more crowded, small mistakes carry larger consequences.

Investigators are now examining the Xiangyang site to determine whether improper storage, illegal stock, or handling errors triggered the blast.
