Renowned Chinese mathematician Wei Dongyi, 33, has become an internet sensation after creating his first social media account on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. Within just five days, the assistant professor at Peking University amassed over 3 million followers, captivating the public with his intellect, humility, and unconventional persona.
Simplicity goes viral
Wei first gained widespread recognition in 2021 after a candid street interview went viral. Clad in simple clothes and holding a water bottle and a plastic bag of steamed buns, his modest appearance starkly contrasted with his immense academic achievements. The public affectionately dubbed him “God Wei” for his brilliance and unpretentious demeanor.
Reluctant internet star
Though Wei has now joined social media, he remains indifferent to fame, stating that he prefers listening to the radio over browsing online platforms. According to the South China Morning Post, the social media account was set up with the help of his family, and the initiative was confirmed by his cousin.
“The account will be focused on mathematics content,” the cousin said, aiming to help Wei connect more with the world while staying true to his academic values.
Who is Wei Dongyi?
A native of Shandong province, Wei currently teaches in the Department of Mathematics at Peking University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions. His research specializes in partial differential equations and differential geometry, fields known for their complexity and foundational importance in modern mathematics.
Despite his fame, Wei remains devoted to research and teaching, having declined numerous lucrative offers in favour of academia.
Public fascination
Much of the public’s fascination stems not only from Wei’s intellect but also from his physical appearance and dental health, which many noted as unconventional for someone in the public spotlight. However, these very qualities have also become symbols of authenticity in a world saturated with curated personas.
“He’s the real deal — pure, focused, and brilliant,” one commenter wrote. “A genius who doesn’t need filters or flashy clothes.”
As Wei Dongyi’s Douyin account continues to grow, many hope it will become a platform for inspiring a new generation of math enthusiasts and a reminder that brilliance often comes wrapped in simplicity.
