Prosecutors in Okinawa, Japan, have requested a 10-year prison sentence for U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Jamel Clayton, 22, who stands accused of sexual assault resulting in injury to a local woman. The Naha District Court will deliver its verdict on June 24.
Marine maintains innocence as trial concludes
During Monday’s closing arguments at Naha District Court, prosecutors emphasized the credibility of the victim’s testimony, which they said aligned with objective evidence. They condemned Clayton’s actions as “egoistic” and driven solely by “sexual desire.”
Clayton, who pleaded not guilty at his June 2 arraignment, denied all allegations, insisting he never choked or injured the woman and did nothing suspicious. His defense team echoed these claims, arguing the testimony was unreliable and pushing for acquittal.
Allegations detail a violent assault
The indictment states that on May 26, 2024, Clayton:
- Wrapped his arms around the victim from behind for sexual purposes
- Choked her, causing injuries that required two weeks to heal
The case has drawn significant attention in Okinawa, where U.S. military personnel have faced scrutiny over past incidents. The court’s ruling later this month will determine whether Clayton faces a decade behind bars.
