France is currently facing its largest wildfires in years, tearing through the Mediterranean region near the Spanish border. The blaze, which erupted earlier this week, has already claimed one life and left several others injured. Authorities confirmed on Wednesday that the fire has burned an area larger than the city of Paris, prompting military intervention as local emergency services struggle to contain the crisis.
Government Response and Scale of Disaster
French Prime Minister François Bayrou described the incident as a “disaster on an unprecedented scale.” With over 15,000 hectares of land already scorched—an area comparable to the total land affected by wildfires in several entire past years—the fire marks the worst single blaze in France since 1949. The government has called in the military to support firefighting efforts, with soldiers expected to join operations from Thursday.
Widespread Evacuations and Property Damage
At least 25 homes have been destroyed in the path of the fire, which spread rapidly through forests and small villages. Residents and tourists were forced to flee in panic. Roads were shut down, and emergency services were overwhelmed with calls. In the village of Jonquières, mayor Jacques Piraux said, “More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down. It’s hellish. It looks like a lunar landscape.”
Tourists and residents in neighbouring areas have been asked to stay indoors unless ordered to evacuate. Two large campgrounds were also evacuated as a safety precaution.

Holidaymakers caught in the wildfire have shared chilling accounts of their narrow escapes. Dutch tourist Renate Koot, who was vacationing in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, described the moment she and her partner realized the danger: “One moment we were on the phone with our children, thinking, ‘Look, a fire.’ The next, we had to jump in the car and flee while praying for protection. We didn’t take anything. Just left. We’re okay. Miraculously.”
Firefighting Challenges and Weather Conditions
Experts and officials have noted that strong winds are exacerbating the situation, making the fire unpredictable and challenging to control. The Aude region, where the fire is burning, has been under drought conditions, further fueling the flames.
“Lack of rainfall in recent months has played a major role in the spread of the fire since the vegetation is very dry,” stated the environment ministry. Weather conditions, including winds of up to 50 km/h, have also rekindled parts of the fire previously extinguished.
Climate Change and Regional Risk
Scientists warn that the Mediterranean’s increasingly hot and dry summers are making the region especially vulnerable to wildfires. According to climate and agriculture analyst Serge Zaka, “With climate change, the risk of having wildfires is expected to increase during the summer, but also to extend into autumn and spring, and spread toward other parts of France.”
The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service states that Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, with temperatures rising at twice the global average since the 1980s.
Wildfires Spread to Spain and Portugal
The wildfire crisis is not limited to France. Neighboring Spain and Portugal are also grappling with extreme heat and fire outbreaks. Spain has been enduring a prolonged heatwave since Sunday, with temperatures soaring to 43°C (109.4°F) in several regions.
In Tarifa, a popular southern kitesurfing destination, a fire believed to have started from a caravan in a campsite has prompted emergency evacuations. High winds and heat have caused flare-ups even in areas where fires were previously under control.
Meanwhile, Portugal has already lost over 42,000 hectares to wildfires this year—more than eight times the total damage at this time last year. More than half of this damage occurred in just the past two weeks. A large fire near Vila Real in the north was finally brought under control early Wednesday after burning through multiple days of extreme temperatures reaching 40°C.
