In a fatal event, a man shot six people including his girlfriend, before he shot himself at a birthday party in Colorado Springs. However, he did not fire on the children. The traumatized kids were inside a trailer in a mobile home park. Friends and family had gathered to celebrate when the gun violence incident took place on May 11th, 2021

.This massacre was one of the largest mass shootings of late since they seemed to have faded during the height of the pandemic.

How many people die from gun-related injuries in the U.S.?

 According to the data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), In 2017 about 39,000 people died from gun-related injuries in the U.S. alone. This includes deaths due to gun-related suicides, murders, law enforcement-related and unintentional deaths. The exact number of people who died in “mass shooting” is hard to assess as the definition of mass shooting varies with the factors like circumstance and number of victims of the shooting.  

In 2017, 64 percent of the 10,982 gun murders and manslaughters involved the use of handguns, according to the FBI.

What’s shocking is that over three-quarters of murders and suicides in the U.S. involve a gun. In 2017 alone, 14,542 out of 19,510 involved a firearm. And 51 percent of suicides in 2017 involved a handgun. According to the data available on CDC’s website, the number of fun murders between 2014 to 2017 increased by 32 percent. Similarly, the number of gun suicides saw an overall increase of 41 percent between 2006 and 2017. While the percentage of gun violence increased, we must remember that it does not account for the rise in population over the years.

The rates of gun suicides and murders are lower than in the mid-70s. There were 7.2 gun murders and 7.7 gun suicides per 100,000 people in 1974 and 1977, respectively. The rates for gun murders and gun suicides were 4.6 and 6.9 per 100,000 people in 2017, far below the average of 70s.

The rate of gun fatalities also varies from state to state. The highest rates for gun fatalities (per 100,000 people) in 2017 were the highest in Alaska (24.5), Alabama (22.9), Montana (22.5), Louisiana (21.7), Mississippi, and Missouri ( 21.5 each). In the same year, the lowest gun-related deaths were in Hawaii (2.5), Massachusetts, and New York (3.7 each).

The U.S. gun-related deaths were 10.6 per 100,000 people in 2017, according to the study. The U.S. ranked at 20th in the gun fatality rate, which is more than other developed nations. It was much lower in countries like Spain (0.6), Germany (0.9), Australia (1.0), Canada (2.1), and France (2.7).
