Unidentified woman hailed as feminist icon following defiant act
Two days ago, a young woman in Tehran shocked the country by stripping down to her underwear at Islamic Azad University, an apparent protest against Iran’s strict dress code for women. Videos of the act quickly went viral, drawing attention from both activists and authorities. Shortly after, security personnel detained her, and her current location remains unknown, sparking widespread concern.
Identity and university claims
While the woman’s identity has not been confirmed, she has been lauded on social media as a symbol of resistance. However, Amir Mahjob, a university spokesperson, claimed police determined she was experiencing a “mental disorder” and significant personal stress, noting she had recently separated from her partner and was the mother of two children.
Conflicting narratives emerge
An Iranian student-led media outlet, the Amir Kabir newsletter, reported that the woman was harassed by members of the Basij paramilitary force for not adhering to the dress code. This reportedly prompted her protest, leading to what Amnesty International described as her “violent arrest” for challenging the “abusive enforcement” of the dress code. In contrast, Iran’s Fars news agency stated that security personnel approached her calmly to enforce the dress code. Mahjob added that the woman was filming her peers without consent, prompting security intervention for privacy violations.
Concerns over her whereabouts and well-being
Footage circulating online shows bystanders forcibly putting the woman into a car. Mahjob indicated she was taken to a police station and claimed she was in good health. However, with no clear updates on her location, fears for her safety have risen. The Amir Kabir newsletter reported she was beaten during her arrest, a claim supported by calls from Amnesty International for her immediate release and assurances against torture or mistreatment. The London-based group has also urged an independent investigation into allegations of violence.

The incident comes in the wake of heightened tension in Iran regarding women’s rights and dress codes, reignited by the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini. The Iranian-Kurdish woman’s death after her arrest by morality police for an alleged dress code violation led to nationwide protests where women symbolically removed and burned their headscarves. Those protests saw over 500 deaths and thousands of arrests during government crackdowns.

Hossein Ronaghi, a well-known Iranian activist previously imprisoned during the 2022 protests, commended the student’s courage. In a post on X, he called her actions “a revolt against government repression” and “a cry from the bottom of the heart against the oppression that has taken life from people, especially women.”
