Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif Embarrassed After Inaugurating Fake Pizza Hut in Sialkot

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif is facing widespread criticism after inaugurating what turned out to be a fake Pizza Hut outlet in Sialkot—an incident that has quickly snowballed from a local embarrassment into a national talking point about political optics, due diligence, and governance.

The controversy erupted after Pizza Hut Pakistan publicly disowned the outlet, stating that it was unauthorized and illegally using the brand’s name and trademarks. Photos and videos circulating online show Asif attending the opening ceremony, cutting a ribbon amid floral arrangements and applause, unaware—at least publicly—that the establishment was not a legitimate franchise.

What exactly happened in Sialkot?

The incident took place in Sialkot Cantonment, where a restaurant branded as Pizza Hut held a formal inauguration ceremony. Khawaja Asif, a senior cabinet minister and one of Pakistan’s most recognizable political figures, was invited as the chief guest.

A full-fledged inauguration—of the wrong business

Visuals from the event show:

  • A ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Asif
  • Decorative floral setups
  • Applause from attendees
  • Clear use of Pizza Hut branding

At the time, nothing appeared out of the ordinary. The trouble began when Pizza Hut Pakistan issued a clarification, distancing itself entirely from the outlet.

What did Pizza Hut Pakistan say?

Soon after the inauguration gained attention online, Pizza Hut Pakistan released a firm public statement.

Company clarification

The company stated:

“Pizza Hut Pakistan informs our valued customers that an unauthorized outlet falsely using the Pizza Hut name and branding has recently opened in Sialkot Cantonment.”

It went on to clarify:

“This outlet is not associated with Pizza Hut Pakistan, or Yum! Brands. We have formally filed a complaint with the relevant authorities to stop the misuse of our trademark and ensure immediate action.”

The statement left little room for ambiguity: the outlet was fake, and legal action was already underway.

Why this incident matters beyond the optics

At first glance, the episode may seem like a harmless faux pas—a politician attending the wrong opening. But the implications run deeper.

A question of due diligence

Public officials routinely inaugurate:

  • Factories
  • Schools
  • Infrastructure projects
  • Commercial ventures

When a senior minister inaugurates a business, it confers legitimacy and implicit endorsement. In this case, that endorsement inadvertently benefited an operation accused of trademark misuse.

The incident has sparked a broader debate: Should political figures verify licenses and authorizations before lending their presence to commercial launches?

Online mockery and backlash

As expected, social media was quick to seize on the irony.

“Not our slice of the pie”

The incident triggered a wave of memes, sarcasm, and pointed criticism across X, Instagram, and Facebook.

Some notable reactions included:

  • “One ribbon cut, one statement issued. That has to be some kind of record.”
  • “When even Pizza Hut says, ‘Not our slice of the pie.’”
  • “Only in Pakistan can a Defence Minister proudly inaugurate a fake Pizza Hut.”

One particularly scathing comment read:

“Khawaja Asif cut the ribbon, smiled for cameras, and walked away—only for the brand to later declare the outlet unauthorized. No one can parody this level of incompetence.”

While mocking in tone, the reactions reflect a deeper frustration with perceived institutional carelessness.

Has Khawaja Asif responded?

As of now, no official response or clarification from Khawaja Asif has been issued regarding the incident.

The silence has further fueled criticism, with commentators arguing that a brief acknowledgment—or even a statement expressing regret—could have helped defuse the situation.

How franchise misuse happens—and why it’s common

Unauthorized outlets are not unique to Pakistan, but enforcement varies widely.

How fake franchises operate

Such establishments often rely on:

  • Copycat branding and logos
  • Public confusion over franchise authenticity
  • Limited enforcement at the local level

In some cases, they operate for months—or years—before brands intervene.

What made this case different was the high-profile political inauguration, which amplified the issue and forced a swift corporate response.

Pizza Hut’s official presence in Pakistan

To avoid confusion, Pizza Hut Pakistan also clarified its legitimate footprint.

Official outlet count

According to the company:

  • 16 authorized outlets nationwide
    • 14 in Lahore
    • 2 in Islamabad

Notably, none are located in Sialkot, making the unauthorized outlet easier to identify for those familiar with the brand’s official operations.

Should politicians be more cautious with commercial inaugurations?

The episode has reignited discussion around the role of politicians in private commercial events.

Key concerns raised by critics

  • Political legitimacy being used—intentionally or not—to validate illegal businesses
  • Lack of verification mechanisms for guest appearances
  • The risk of misleading consumers

Supporters of stricter norms argue that basic checks, such as verifying business registrations or franchise licenses, should be standard before any public office-holder attends such events.

The reputational cost—for everyone involved

While Pizza Hut moved quickly to protect its brand, the damage had already been done.

Who takes the hit?

  • Consumers, who may be misled
  • The brand, which must defend its trademark
  • Public officials, whose credibility takes a dent

For Khawaja Asif, the incident adds to a growing list of moments that critics cite as examples of poor judgment—fairly or otherwise.

TL;DR

  • Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif inaugurated a Pizza Hut outlet in Sialkot
  • The outlet was later declared unauthorized by Pizza Hut Pakistan
  • The company has filed a complaint to stop trademark misuse
  • Social media reacted with sharp criticism and mockery
  • The incident has sparked debate over due diligence by political figures
