Following the attempted shooting at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, Hoffman tried to clarify his previous statement, expressing his horror and sadness over the incident. “Peter Thiel said that my lawsuit work against Trump was ‘turning a clown into a martyr.’ In that context, I replied that I wished that Trump would martyr himself — meaning let himself be held accountable,” Hoffman wrote on X, referencing Trump’s legal troubles. “Of course I meant nothing about any sort of physical harm or violence, which I categorically deplore,” he added.
Hoffman’s advisor, Dmitri Mehlhorn, also issued an apology after sending an email to journalists suggesting the shooting might have been staged for Trump’s benefit. Mehlhorn, co-founder of the “Investing in the US” fund with Hoffman, speculated on the possibility of a “staged” shooting or an act by a “crazy anti-Trumper.” He later expressed regret for the email, stating it was sent without consultation and apologizing for diverting attention from the central issue of political violence.
