Nigeria elections: Ruling party’s Bola Tinubu declared president-elect in spite of the uproar

Nigeria elections

The electoral commission of Nigeria has proclaimed Bola Tinubu, a candidate for the ruling party, as the country’s new president following a contentious weekend vote. The ceremony was not attended by the two main opposition parties which demanded the vote to be canceled. Tinubu later stood out for the integrity of the national election and urged citizens to rally around him. The election was “flawed,” according to opposition parties.

The candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Tinubu, received 8.79 million votes

The candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Tinubu, received 8.79 million votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the opposition candidate, received 6.9 million votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party received 6.1 million. “I am very happy I have been elected the president of the federal republic of Nigeria,” Tinubu said to cheers in Abuja. “This is a serious mandate. I hereby accept it.”

Due to the employment of modern technologies during the elections, there were issues with the electoral process throughout the nation. The technology had problems, though, and Nigeria’s famously shoddy communications infrastructure was unable to manage it. The INEC had previously stated that the results from each polling place will be posted in real-time on its website. Unfortunately, the procedure was hampered by a number of obstacles, and many units were unable to do so right away, which created mistrust in the operation.

With Tinubu’s victory, the All Progressives Congress (APC) party continues to hold onto power in Nigeria

There are still thousands of results to upload. The two major opposition parties, Atiku and Obi, have rejected the results as illegitimate due to systemic flaws. “I commend INEC for running a credible election no matter what anybody says,” Tinubu said. “The lapses that were reported, they were relatively few in number and were immaterial to affect the final outcome of the election.”

With Tinubu’s victory, the All Progressives Congress (APC) party continues to hold onto power in Nigeria, the most populous and leading oil-producing country in Africa. As long as they receive 25% of the vote in at least two-thirds of the 36 states and the federal capital Abuja, a candidate in Nigeria only requires more votes than their competitors to win.
