A senior Mexican cartel figure is now accused of ordering the murder of a 23-year-old beauty influencer who was shot dead while livestreaming to her followers, after his son allegedly asked him to have her killed following their breakup.
Valeria Márquez, an aesthetician and TikTok creator with more than 100,000 followers, was live from her salon in Zapopan, in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, in May 2025 when a gunman walked in and opened fire. She was shot in the chest and head and died on camera, in front of viewers watching in real time.

What Happened to Valeria Márquez?
Márquez ran Blossom the Beauty Lounge, a salon in Zapopan, and had built a following documenting her work and daily life online. According to Mexican officials, a gunman arrived at the salon, confirmed her identity, and shot her multiple times while she was streaming live, in front of her audience.
The killing drew national attention in Mexico partly because it was captured on video and partly because it fit a grim, familiar pattern. Mexican authorities initially investigated the case as a femicide, the legal term under Mexican law for the gender-motivated killing of a woman.
Who Is Accused of Ordering the Killing?
Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch has named Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known by the alias “El R-1,” as the man who ordered the hit. Álvarez Ayala is identified by authorities as the leader of Los Rs, a cell tied to the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organizations.
He was arrested on July 26, 2026, during a security operation in Zapopan. According to García Harfuch, investigators recovered forensic material and encrypted communications tying him to Márquez’s death, along with several other violent acts carried out by his cell across Jalisco and Michoacán.
The alleged motive traces back to his son, Francisco Álvarez, who authorities say had previously dated Márquez. Officials allege Francisco threatened her multiple times after their relationship ended and ultimately asked his father to have her killed. Both Francisco Álvarez and the gunman who carried out the shooting remain at large.
How Is This Connected to a Mayor’s Assassination?
Investigators have also linked Álvarez Ayala’s cell to the November 2025 assassination of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, who had publicly opposed the cartel’s extortion of local businesses. Officials describe it as a separate case from the Márquez killing, but one that implicates the same criminal network.
García Harfuch has said Los Rs operated across Apatzingán, Uruapan, and Morelia in Michoacán, as well as in Jalisco, and that the cell is considered one of the more violent factions tied to CJNG.
Why Was a Different Suspect Named Earlier?
For much of the past year, public attention had centered on a different cartel figure. Early reporting and online speculation pointed to Ricardo “El Doble R” Ruiz Velasco, a lieutenant to CJNG leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, as a possible suspect, and some accounts suggested he’d had his own relationship with Márquez.
Mexican authorities have since said there’s no evidence tying Ruiz Velasco directly to her killing, though some reporting has suggested he and Álvarez Ayala may belong to the same broader organization. The shift in the official account underscores how much of this case has developed well after the murder itself first made headlines.

Álvarez Ayala is now in custody, but the two people authorities say were most directly involved in planning and carrying out the killing — his son and the gunman — have not been arrested.
