Mexican Fisherman Found Alive After 15 Days Inside 328-Foot-Deep Underwater Sinkhole

A 31-year-old Mexican fisherman who disappeared while fishing with his father has been found alive after spending 15 days inside a deep underwater cave, where rescuers discovered him trapped with access to an air pocket.

Erasto Crisanto Valdez disappeared on July 23 after entering a water-filled cave system near San Francisco La Paz, in the municipality of Santa María Chimalapa, Oaxaca. His disappearance triggered an increasingly complex search involving local authorities, specialist divers and Mexico’s Navy.

When rescuers finally located him, Valdez was reportedly more than 328 feet (100 meters) below the surface. He was alive inside a section of the cave where an air pocket had formed, according to reports on the rescue.

The rescue brought an extraordinary end to a search that had initially turned into a recovery operation after repeated underwater searches failed to locate him. “We were prepared to find his body. But God had other plans,” Mexican explorer Carlos Jimenez said.

How Did the Fisherman Disappear?

Valdez had gone fishing with his father at a deep, water-filled cave in the San Francisco La Paz area.

According to local reports, his father managed to return to the surface, but Valdez did not. Authorities began searching the site almost immediately, although the underwater terrain made the operation extremely difficult.

The location is not a simple open-water swimming hole. The cenote contains underwater caves and passages, creating a dangerous environment for divers and making it difficult to determine where a missing person might have become trapped.

Early rescue divers were able to descend more than 60 metres, but the complexity of the underwater cave system limited the search.

How Did Rescuers Finally Find Him?

One of the most important clues came from an object Valdez had been carrying when he disappeared: a fishing harpoon.

Specialist divers recovered the harpoon at a depth of roughly 90 meters, providing rescuers with a much more precise indication of where Valdez may have gone.

The discovery prompted rescuers to concentrate their efforts deeper within the cave system.

After the search continued, an international team reportedly located Valdez at approximately 328 feet below the surface. According to reports, he had survived inside a section of the cave containing an air pocket.

The rescue team included specialists from Mexico, Germany, the United States, and the Dominican Republic.

How Could Someone Survive for 15 Days Underwater?

The crucial factor appears to have been the air pocket.

Valdez was not reportedly submerged underwater for the entire 15 days. Instead, he was found inside an enclosed cave space where air was trapped above the water.

That distinction is critical. A person cannot survive for days without breathing, but an air-filled chamber within a flooded cave can potentially provide breathable air while also protecting someone from the surrounding water.

His survival would still have depended on extremely unusual circumstances.

With no reliable access to food or fresh drinking water, dehydration and starvation would become major threats. By the time rescuers reached him, Valdez was reportedly suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition.

Why Was the Rescue So Difficult?

Underwater cave rescues are among the most technically demanding rescue operations.

Divers must contend with several hazards simultaneously:

  • Extreme depth and pressure
  • Limited visibility
  • Narrow underwater passages
  • Complicated cave networks
  • Limited breathing-gas supplies
  • The risk of becoming disoriented
  • Long decompression requirements after deep dives

The difficulty of the location was evident during the initial search. Local and specialist divers repeatedly entered the cenote but were unable to locate Valdez. Later, Mexico’s Navy conducted five underwater searches and reportedly reached depths of about 120 meters while examining the underwater caves.

The discovery of Valdez alive, therefore, came after days of increasingly specialised search efforts.

What Is a Cenote?

A cenote is a natural sinkhole or depression that contains groundwater, often with access to an extensive underground cave system.

Cenotes are particularly common in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, where soluble limestone has created one of the world’s largest networks of underground waterways.

The word “cenote” comes from the Yucatec Maya term ts’ono’ot, generally referring to a water-filled cavity or well.

Although the term is most strongly associated with the Yucatán, water-filled limestone caves and sinkholes occur in other parts of Mexico as well.

Why Are Cenotes Important to Mexico?

Cenotes are more than unusual geological formations.

Across much of the Yucatán Peninsula, interconnected underground waterways form an important freshwater system. Because limestone is highly porous, pollutants introduced into the surface environment can move relatively easily into groundwater.

That makes contamination from untreated wastewater, agriculture, and rapid development a serious concern.

The same geological characteristics that create spectacular underwater caves can also make these ecosystems particularly vulnerable.

What Happens After a Deep Cave Rescue?

Valdez was brought to the surface on a stretcher and taken for medical treatment.

Reports say he was suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition after his prolonged confinement inside the cave.

A person rescued after such an ordeal would require careful medical evaluation, particularly because prolonged dehydration and starvation can affect the cardiovascular system, kidneys and other organs.

The immediate priority is therefore stabilization and treatment rather than simply bringing the person out of the cave.

A Search That Nearly Became a Recovery Operation

The circumstances make Valdez’s survival particularly remarkable because rescuers had increasingly feared that they would find him dead.

Local reporting from late July shows how difficult the search had become. Authorities had already conducted multiple dives, and Mexico’s Navy eventually searched the underwater cave system to a depth of approximately 120 meters without finding him.

The discovery of an air pocket inside the cave appears to have provided the crucial explanation for how Valdez survived.

His case is a reminder of how little rescuers may know about what lies beyond the visible entrance of an underwater cave.

What We Still Don’t Know

Several details surrounding Valdez’s 15-day ordeal remain unclear.

It is not yet publicly established exactly how he reached the chamber, how large the air pocket was, how much breathable air it contained or whether he had access to any source of water.

Those details will matter to specialists trying to understand how he managed to remain alive for so long.

For now, the most significant fact is that a search that began with a missing fisherman ended with rescuers finding him alive more than 300 feet beneath the surface.
