Singapore: 2 lions try to escape at Changi Airport, get sedated

According to a media report, two lions were shot with a tranquilizer gun and sedated on Sunday. The incident took place at Singapore’s Changi Airport after they escaped from their freight container. As a result, caused a mild scare in the area. The lions were being transported in a container to an overseas facility. However, while recovering from sedation under the care of the Mandai Wildlife Group, reports The Straits Times.

Singapore Airlines was in charge of the shipment. They had requested assistance from the group’s veterinary and carnivore care teams. Though, there is no clarity on where the cats are coming from or where they’re going. According to reports, the shipment contains seven lions. In conversation with The Straits Times, SIA mentioned that the lions were completely contained within the safety netting. There was the installation of a net around the container. The airline’s operations were running smoothly.

They will remain in our care for the time being

“While the incident at Changi Airport is under investigation. The immediate priority is the lions’ well-being. SIA is working with the Mandai Wildlife Group. It operates Singapore’s only wildlife facility that is equipped to look after large carnivores, on this,” SIA says. As per a Mandai Wildlife Group spokesman, as a result, the lions were given sedatives. Before moving them to Mandai’s animal quarantine facility. “However the lions are under observation. They will remain in our care for the time being and we remain in close contact with SIA on the matter.”

However, this certainly is not the first time an animal has found itself unexpectedly free of its confinement. In 2005, a jaguar named Angel escaped through a small hole used by zookeepers to throw meat into the enclosure. Forcing the zoo to evacuate approximately 500 visitors. In 2019, a bull from a Lim Chu Kang farm escaped. And was still on the run after more than 14 hours. Last year, a muscular white horse made its way out. It was discovered trotting alongside cars at a traffic intersection on Eng Neo Avenue. Cocoa escaped from Paisano Polo Academy on Turf Club Road. And was back to its owner after 20 minutes.
