A Texas man is suing Walmart for $100 million in damages, or “unlimited free lifetime shopping” at any location. Roderick Jackson of Waskom, Texas, filed two handwritten complaints with the United States District Court for the Western District of Arkansas on Monday. Walmart’s headquarters are located in Bentonville, Arkansas. The complaints do not explain why Jackson is suing.
Jackson is also requesting that Walmart cover all of his court fees
The accusations claim that an event occurred in March 2021 in a retailer in Omaha, Nebraska, involving “pretence of shoplifting” and a violation of Jackson’s civil rights “based on race/colour.” Jackson is also requesting that Walmart cover all of his court fees. He filed the allegations without counsel and was unable to be reached at the phone number indicated for him.
A spokesperson for Walmart said Thursday that it does “not tolerate discrimination of any kind.” “Mr. Jackson’s allegations are almost identical to a lawsuit he filed against our company in 2021 that was dismissed. We intend to defend the company against the allegations once we have been properly served and will quickly ask the court to dismiss any claims that are without merit,” the company said. In 2021, Jackson sued Walmart over the same alleged incident. He wrote in that complaint that he was racially profiled and falsely accused of a crime, which led to his being arrested.
According to the complaint, handcuffs caused Jackson severe hardship and pain. The complaint does not identify the police department. He requested $100 million and “a huge credit for future shopping” at first, but later revised the complaint to seek $175 million in damages. The action was dismissed that year because he did not properly serve Walmart, according to court documents.
