How a toddler vanished and was finally recovered years later
In a long-awaited breakthrough, 4-year-old Blessing Wasso has been found safe in Chicago nearly three years after she disappeared during a court-ordered visit with her mother.
The child, who was only one year old at the time of her disappearance in November 2021, was located during a coordinated effort by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force and the Chicago Police Department (CPD), according to a report by CWB Chicago.
What happened in 2021?
Blessing vanished on November 5, 2021, during a supervised visit with her biological mother, Erika Ephraim (also known as Ericka Wasso), at a Brighton Park facility. At the time, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) had legal custody of the child and promptly reported both the mother and daughter missing.
Authorities suspected early on that Ephraim had absconded with the child, but her whereabouts remained unknown for years.
The investigation resurfaces in 2025
The case gained new momentum earlier this year. On January 1, 2025, CPD issued a public appeal for help in locating a missing infant—who turned out to be Blessing. That development led investigators to two residences, one in Chicago and another in Blue Island.
Authorities later confirmed that Ephraim was living at the Chicago address with a girl who appeared to be 4 or 5 years old.
Tactical operation leads to recovery
After conducting further analysis—including the use of age-progressed images from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children—the U.S. Marshals and CPD launched a tactical operation on June 3.
Officers forced entry into the Chicago home, and both mother and daughter were safely located by June 6, police confirmed.
Ephraim attempted to flee during the operation but was apprehended. She was booked into the Cook County Jail on multiple outstanding warrants.
What happens next for Blessing Wasso?
Authorities have not disclosed details about the child’s current condition or custody status, citing privacy concerns. However, since the DCFS had legal custody when she went missing, the agency is expected to be involved in her care moving forward.
A rare case of long-term recovery
Blessing’s recovery after nearly three years underscores the power of inter-agency cooperation and the value of advanced forensic tools like age progression imaging.
The U.S. Marshals Service credited their success to the combined intelligence of federal agents, local law enforcement, and child welfare advocates.
A good place for a visual timeline showing major events from 2021 to 2025.
While many child abduction cases are resolved quickly, those that stretch into years often go cold. Blessing Wasso’s story stands as a rare and welcome exception.
